Default COG Update with some hope!

Bigbos, Forcefed, Tom, I tried something tonight that showed me a peak of light at the end of the tunnel. I have alot more I'm going to try, but it will take time since most of it will require the help of a guy who does custom fab work for me. Anyway here's what I did.

First, as I stated in a previous post, I was getting belt slip/vibration around 3000 rpms in any gear I was in.

Second, I tightened the belt a bit and it held to till about 3500rpms.

Today, I decided to go against what is right to try something that may work. I took the bracket off and reassembled everything down tight. I then took a new serpentine belt that I didn't need anymore and made a custom strap. I attached it to the unused bolt hole just above the large socket head bolt which attaches the SC to the bracket. That strap, once on the SC, was attached to the frame just below the fuseboxes (on the side facing the motor) were there is an unused 15mm threaded hole. I used big washers to distribute the load. It was made to fit tight. Once I tightened the 15mm down, it slightly "preloaded" the SC towards the drivers side which is what I was shooting for. Once that was in place I retightened the belt (I figured I would get it to stop slipping or break it). Here's the good part........In an effort to see if anything was going to come apart, I took it a little easy but I granny shifted all the way to 4th gear then I started "rolling" into the throttle and the bypass valve closed about 2500 rpms , I had 5lbs of boost at 3000rpms and it climbed to nearly 10 PSI around 5000 rpms before it started to slip/vibrate. This all happened in less than 2 seconds and I was doing 100 mph. Words CANNOT describe the feeling of this 408 at 10PSI . My 346 did not pull as hard at 12 PSI. Cannot wait to solve this belt issue and get to the dyno.

One negative note ....These belts are likely to slip in lower gears with hard WOT blasts easier than what I have described but it is a start to what we need.

Mark

Yea, my bracket support takes care of any flexing issues......so that is similar to the strap...

How much belt tension are you using....??

I'm at 3/4"

I notice I get better belt grip when I ease into it from a 3rd gear roll..

i'm curious if an extra idler would help the cog situation ( like the one in the other thread, which replaces one of the standoffs)?

I get better grip the tighter it is???? I'm working on the bracket support, new standoffs (steel) and a extra idler. ASP already shipped me a off the shelf size but it's to big. I'll be calling Lee tomorrow to see if he can make me a smaller one asap.

Think they are actually PLATINUM... anyway they are the stock mounts...A last resort will be solid mounts and bolting the SC to the frame!

So are you replacing the bottom standoff with an idler now, will this size belt still fit?

Good idea Mark, I was running my cog belt at less then 3/4 tension and it didn't make it past the 1/8mi mark before it was completely stripped of teeth. I didn't have the vibration you guys had. The steel standoffs sound like a good idea too, I had extra long bolts that replaced the inch long ATI standoff bolts so in effect my standoffs are a solid piece. I asked lee to set me up with another idler back when it was going all together and offered to pay for it, but never heard back from him. I guess after 2 sets of cogs he was through making stuff for me
I am sure you will get things to work

I hope we can get things to work, otherwise I'll probably give SD a try, and that will be IT.......

I've done everything under the sun to get the setup to "work"

C'mon guys...we can't give up! Talked with Lee at ASP today and he is going to work with me on this issue for all of us! The goal will be to put the belt within a 1/2 inch of the otherside of the belt being pushed down by the Tensioner. This will give the max number "tooth to tooth" contact on each pulley. Lee is sending me the next size up belt by Wednesday. I'm supposed to put it on and see how much travel there is for a Idler pulley. Then he will make a pulley or I'm going to have a local guy make it if Lee's delivery is to far out. I'll updated everyone one Wednesday night or Thursday. I'm working on this end stay with me.
