Default The Silver Bullet build from start to now

I figured it was time for me to attempt a build thread on my car, which
everyone calls the Silver Bullet. I've never wrote up anything like this
so bear with me. I'm going to start at when i first got the car 7 years
ago, and work towards what it's become today and is still a work in
progress. There are more parts I have for it that have yet to be
installed, and more I want, so I'll continue to update as she evolves.

So let's begin. 7 years ago I came across this 1998 z28. At the time the
car had a basic LS1 that already happen to have a MS3 cam and long tube
headers.This wasn't my first LS1 so I shortly put a LS6 intake and 150
shot on it,and had texas speed tune it.

A year or so rocked a long and came across a killer deal on a stage II
HP performance turbo kit with a little 67mm turbo. This was my first
exp. with turbo ls stuff. They were around then we just didn't have the
knowledge that we do know about these motors. The kit it self fit like
hell, and we pretty much was in constant contact with HP letting them
know what would and would not work.

these are some later photos of it after the fuel system.
It put down 512hp and 526tq on the dyno with 12psi
The LS1 lasted me a week and a half and burnt a hole in every piston on
the driver side. (reasoning for the fuel system lol) Fuel system is a
weldon a1100 with a -10 feed and -8 return, 80# siesmen injectors ,
runing vp110 and water meth.

So I replaced it with a 370ci LQ9 probe pistons,scat rods,king race
bearings, custom cam 228/232 598/601 on a 114+2 . stock 317 heads and
ls6 intake. A moser 12 bolt with a eaton unit and 35 spline axles was also installed along with a th400.
The bigger ci was now being choked by that little 67mm and on 17psi the
best we could pull was 446hp. I was disappointed to say the least , but
the car stayed this way for the next 5 years. With upgrades to
suspention , bmr trak pak torque arm and crossmember, lca relocation
brackets, strange drag struts and shocks, tubular k-member. and a 6pt cage

About 5 months ago I decide it was time for power, and started by doing
away with the 98 model computer due to it not supporting a 3bar map so i
had a buddy of mine do all of that.
.

That was shortly followed by me selling the kit off the car and deciding to
build one myself. I was on somewhat of a budget so i went the truck
manifold rout. Now I'm definitely not a master welder or fabricator, but
I get by. So I ordered a v-band kit and cot the flanges off the manifolds.

I had to weld a extention pipe for the driver side on to clear my alt.
Then just a simple 2.5" crossover pipe tucked just under the harmonic
balancer.I wanted to mount the turbo facing forward but didnt have the
room. So i merged it and ran the pipe right aginst the passenger side
frame rail. Which is about the same location the other was in.
I stayed somewhat on a budget so i used a 60mm GodSpeed wastegate which I have been pleased with thus far. Due to space constraints I was unable to mount the gate in the flow angle that I wanted, so i mounted it at
90* at the merge.

The way I wanted to run the downpipe and turbo I need to stand the radiator
upright. My buddy now owns Silver Streak so I used the same radiator
they used in that build. It's a griffin 27.5x17.5x3. I was able to trim a few spots on the fan srouds and use the stock fans.

the mounts were temporary.

For the intercooler I used a GodSpeed 31x12x4 3" outlets and to mount it I
used a simple piece of steel across the frame rails.

I do ceramic coating, so I went ahead and coated my hot side part in a thermal barrier to help control the heat in the engine bay. The compressor housing was done in a turbine coating which is said to increase cfm by 3-5.

The turbo is a v3 billet wheel s480 in a T6 with a 1.32ar 80mm compressor and 96mm exhaust wheel. From Jose at forced inductions.

I then moved to making my cold side. I just used 3" aluminum piping. As I ndo not have a tig a buddy came by,marked it all then took it to his place to weld it. Once it was installed I drilled and taped for the water/meth nozzles. I'm running 2 625ml jets with a 75% meth mixture. I also mounted the blow off valve, which is a Tial knock off. For the record it works awesome.

I then made the downpipe and wastegate dump. I wanted no chance of restriction so the downpipe is short ,simple, and 5' lol. I then coated them as well. I wrapped all hot parts in the titanium wrap.

Later I added a turbo blanket and done a wire tuck. Also cleaned up the core support.

The the boost controller was another place that i didn't skimp on. I had an eboost 2 and hated it so I sold it and got a boost leash with the bump box built in, plush they are only 2 hours from me. I love it, so simple to use.

I used plastic hard line for all my co2 and vaccum lines.

I was having some heating problems so we cut the bumper and slp grille to allow more air flow.

I then redone the headlights and got rid of those damn halos!!!!

I took it to Justune in kansas city for the tune. we battled a few problems. One those plastic line for the co2. Yeah they melted at the wastegate. So I hardlined them away from where they could melt.

The next issue was at 14psi and only 10* of timing the car started blowing through the converter BAD! bad enough I thought the trans let go. so that's where I'm at now is pulling the trans to ship the converter to PTC for them to fix.

Nice work!
Don't sweat the wire feed work, that's why god invented the titanium wrap!

Nice build and clean car. Any chance you know the front coil spring weight? My car with the iron block and turbo kit is almost on the tire. Thanks mike

Nice build. I've got an eboost2 now and my boost leash/pulse leash combo should be here soon. I actually don't mind the eboost2, but I wanted the pulse leash and figured i'd get the combo and sell the eboost2. Where did you get the co2 bottle and regulator? What made the lines melt? Do you have a pic of it before/after at the gates?

the pressloc fitting were getting hot and melting the line inside the fittings. also even as hard as I tried to keep it away from everything, one of the lines melted to the cylinder head. the regulator is a dedenbear that i got from a local shop, the bottle I already had in the shop from our other cars. cant remember where it came from

Car looks really good, nice progress through the setups! Our turbo piping looks similar to each other too

Can you post a few more pictures of the hood near the wipers? I have a Sunoco to the windshield, but am considering cutting it back so that I can put my wipers back on. I'm curious how it looks near the windshield area. Also, did you need to support the hood differently since the dzus' are only on the sides/front?

Thanks!
Josh
