Default New to the ls turbo game

I have a lq4 6.0L with 317 casting heads. Im looking at the s480 turbo with 80lb injectors . My goal is to try and make 1000HP at the crank and see 800 at the tire. I have not made my mind up on what transmission to use yet. I will be driving this on the street about 40 miles to work one way and then to the track.

Im looking in to a 4l80e or a turbo 400 with a trans brake but dont know.

What internals need to be changed rods and pistions?

What camshaft? I see people say stock is where its at or do I need to get a custom cut cam?

A little bit about the truck
12point cage
ladder bars
coil over shocks
dana 60
5.13 gears
tire is 31x13.5 r15
20gl fuel cel
Current performance Ls wiring harness.
Current Performance Dual Core, Dual Pass all aluminum radiator and condenser.
Aeromotive A1000 Fuel Pump.
Aeromotive A1000 6 Injected Bypass Regulator
Holley LS Modular High Ram Intake Manifold or Edelbrock 28095 - Edelbrock Victor Series EFI Intake Manifold
Edelbrock Victor LS Series 90mm Throttle Body.

You'll probably want a gear change first. Thats a lot of gear for that turbo on a 6.0L. I would go with a 218/218 or something along those lines in a Lq4. The s480 will get you to 800rwhp on about 17-19 psi or so. The trans will depend on how you use your truck. If you do any street driving, I would for sure go with the 4L80e. As long as your tune is good, you will be able to run the stock long block. Look up Smokeshow on performance trucks and you'll see he ran a Lq4 long block, S480, 4L80e, triple 12, ect and he made almost 1000 to the tire. Just build and tune it right and it will meet all your expectations.

It's all up in the air and depends in the budget. Lots of people have had good luck with factory internals, depends totally on the tune. With a good tune, you would probably be alright. Cam is the same way, factory one will work fine. However, Stock48 specs the isky cams and is running low 8s on a 218/218 baby cam with a 6.0.

Only questionable thing I see is your gearing. 5.13 gears with a 3 speed?!?! Forty mile trip to work? That seems like it would be extreme overkill even with the 80e.

All gear raito is based off a true 26" tire so with a 31" tire the raito will be cut to a lesser gear (5.13 / 31) * 26= 4.30 You also have to think the tire is 13.5" wide that is going to soke up some of the power to rotate it. the truck will fit a 31x15w. Back to the topic at hand

Stock short block can take a beating if tuned right e85 helps some with safety/power goals. If you can afford a forged rod and piston setup then cool go for it ..s480 should be fine if you can swing the race cover that will help..custom cam from tick, tooley, etc. with that gear I would go 80e.

I'd go with a 4.10 gear.
