Default Thinking about going boost….need some input

Ok so I've been on the fence about adding more power, and was mainly thinking to put in a cam and then spray 150 shot. Now….I'm thinking of doing a turbo build.

It will be more of a budget build and I don't want to get too crazy. My thoughts are getting the On3 76mm turbo, find a hot side kit, and get the cxracing intercooler kit. The thing is that I'll be boosting the stock ls1 block. Would 10psi be ok if tune was spot? Maybe add meth kit down the road. All with pump gas 91 here in Cali.

My goal is around 550rwhp and get sub 10's. Right now I'm at 11.6 with bolt-ons and a LS6 cam. I also have a FLT level 4 4L60e with a Yank PT4000 and 3.73 gears, should I change any of those to accommodate for the turbo setup?

I just figure If I want power, the turbo route will always have room to grow. And yes, if this stock LS1 block takes a dump, I will look for an iron block.

Thanks for any input in advance!!

If you got the money, turbo is the way to go. This guy did the biggest "budget" build I have seen using MANY stock parts on the stock bottom end.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...l#post17057599

But you need to keep in mind, that even him with his buddy that did the welding still had many thousands invested, and its only a matter of time before something gives. In my opinion, even if done cheap like this guy you're gonna need some deep pockets. When you start adding just the basics you'll have to have to make it work (turbo, hot side, cold side, waste gate, BOV, boost controller, fuel system, intercooler, ect.) you will see that even done cheaply, you'll have WAY more invested than the best nitrous system available.

i would suggest 3.50's around there, or else you'll be trapping to high in 3rd for a stock bottom end, i just got out of my 565whp turbo stock ls1, had a single 7575 billet ball bearing, 93+100% meth and 12lbs of boost, best time i was able to get was a 10.5 leaving on a couple pounds of boost, trapping 132. I also pulled the front tires up a couple inches off the ground so make sure if you want low 10's, at that power level, to have a strong rear end as youll need to launch hard.. so your goals are good, you have a lil better cam so you should hit right around 550 on 10lbs, the motor should be fine there, mine neverrr showed anything negative, so just make sure you have a good tune and get meth asap to keep your IAT's down, and you should reach your goal, however i wouldnt advise going over that power level on your ls1
Also, this will NOT be cheap haha, you think it in your head and then things pop up outa nowhere, pusher fans, injectors, boost a pump, gauges, ect. ect.

Yeah thats the only thing I fear is that one thing is going to lead to another, and my budget is through the roof.

Last time I had a nice wet plate nitrous kit with some goodies and cost me around $1k for everything.

I have a lot of thinking to do….

Boosting even cheaply is not anywhere remotely cheap. You can try to reason yourself into believing otherwise, but better to figure it out now, than halfway through your build when you realize you just can't afford to do the rest (seen that done before).

Nitrous is the cheapest way to go fast. If you are looking for cheap speed that is your answer. If you CAN afford it, I promise boosting is a TON of fun. But to go broke to do it, IMO is not worth it.

Look at all the parts you'll HAVE to have;

Fuel system (pumps, lines, injectors, meth injection)
Intercooler
Turbo
Turbo parts (both hot side and cold side)
Boost controller
Waste gate
BOV
Tune
And room for extras that WILL come up

Figure out a full list and get a total. If that's something you can live with, I say go for it!

for just cheap stuff use an ebay turbo it and an ls6 cam a buddy of mine did one on a 99 ss he just sold and he made a little over 520 but its not very reliable and he did his the cheapest of everything, just a warning the cheaper the stuff the more its going to cost you in the long run when something burst or breaks

Budget imo should start with the Denmah kit, that comes with most of what your going to need. Now if your doing it yourself that will help Alot. Grab a set of 80lb injectors and a dual 255 setup. That fuel setup will be enough for your power goals and alil room to grow (700rwhp is what nastyn8 says) but that right there is 1k. Then denmah kit is 900. Then you have to buy the truck manifolds, finish the hot side, tubular k member to run the exhaust out the back right there is over 2k and that's just some of it. Then you got radiator, fans, misc lines and hoses and on and on. Set your budget up front. Set a true realistic number and leave maybe 200-500 just for little things that pop up and that will give you a good idea if boost is truly what you can afford to do at this time. Because from my experience and from reading everyone's builds. Your starting budget usually was doubled after your all done

But once your done it's good to go, power always there. Nitrous is fun and cheaper to start but always filling up bottles can get costly at 55 to fill a 10lb bottle here.

Honestly to keep it budget minded, I was thinking no more then $4k to spend on all parts from start to finish. But when you do factor in all the necessary components, fuel, gauges, piping, etc... the $$$ does add up.

The nitrous bottle refills will get costly, but I can't see myself going through maybe 5-6 bottles a year.
