The nipple is required to keep the check valve inside the stem of the pump. The only reason why the nipple would come off is if someone was pulling on the attached hose once it was placed on the pump or if there were some major pressure spikes. A simple fix to preventing the nipple & hose from popping off is to take some rough grit sandpaper and scuff up the stem of the pump or use a hot object to create small divots in the stem of the pump. This will provide a good friction surface for the hose to grab onto and will prevent the hose from sliding off along with the nipple. Double clamping is NOT the answer here.

The nipple came off because I needed to replace the hose that was cut too short.

Are you saying I need to have it there?? The check valve will come out without it??

Make sure the checkvalve is in the pump and press the nipple back on.

The nipple is just pressed on at the factory after the checkvalve is inserted.
Since the outlet stem of the pump is very smooth there is nothing for the hose to bite on. This is why you have to ruff it up a bit so it has some bite.
