My pt88 doesn't spin at idle. Starts to spin with a little throttle (not sure exact rpm) then slowly stops agin or moves VERY slowly. Sounds normal to me.

Are you having an issue?

that's normal for a new turbo, once you get some heat and start boosting it'll break-in, loosen up and probably spin at idle

Just spinning my turbo over with my fingers, it is much more free after getting up to temp, hot turbo/hot oil.

My Borg Warner 88mm spins at idle. It is on a 408 with a divided housing and it spins at idle.

The smallest exhaust leaks before the turbo can make it not spin at low rpm, so make sure there are no leaks.

I've recently had a very in depth conversation with a local turbo builder about this. (MIDWEST TURBO STL)

I'd like to share : I have a One3 76mm I bought used off of a blown up motor. Installed it and it would on occasion not spin at idle. It was found to have issues and rebuilt and still had no spin at idle.

Chris at Midwest explained to me the potential for why that would happen. First is he said the majority of Chinese turbos have very large oil orifices inside compared to BW/precision/turbonetics etc assuming to compensate for not fantastic bearings/tolerances. That being said depending on CI of engine and exhaust housing sometimes the hydrolock type condition inside can't be overcome by the exhaust gases to actually move the wheel at idle (especially true with cold start with thick/cold oil)

Other consideration is general CI vs Turbo sizing. A huge exhaust housing on a small CI motor will typically lend itself to not moving enough air to physically turn the shaft at idle.

My personal experience is: 5.3 with 68mm exhaust housing and .96 AR and on occasion mine will not spin at idle... I was concerned about it and was given the above explanation. Hope this helps.

Does it spin freely by hand with the motor off? Does it bind at all? All the turbo's i've had spin freely at idle.

I have used a couple of the ON3 turbos and found that fresh out of the box new they don't spin at idle. After running the engine up to temp the wheel looks like it stutters a little. Take it out driving around a little to create heat and it will spin away at idle. We have found that the farther away from the manifold heat the less it will spin and the closer the more it spins. We always heat wrap the hot side as much as possible to help get more heat to the turbo. Run it through the boost and as long as the turbo is good you will find these are not all that bad for the money. We have been using on on an Escalade running 12lbs for over a year and it has held up very well.

My S480 spins fast at a 500-600 rpm idle with a beastly 4.8 pushing it. Non-divided 2.5" hotside. somethings wrong if it's not spinning until 3000 rpm.

I understand the oil heats up and thins out. Which can have a big affect. But turbo bearings don't loosen up or "break in".

40 sec mark you can see it spinning pretty fast.

The only turbo that could be tight new is a ballbearing . a journal setup has a radial clearance and thrust clearance. If its tight that is scary
