Default Boosted C6 Guys. Is My Car Running To Hot?

My 08 z51 a6 LS3 is getting hotter than I'm liking. At idle it runs 190, running down the road runs 200-210 but after any pull on boost its at 220-225 even with a 160 thermostat in it. Is this normal, or exeptible? The car is running 16 pounds of boost with only 10 degrees of timing. Do I need to start thinking about an aftermarket radiator? Or other options? Thanks.

I have an aftermarket Dewitt's radiator, SPAL fans, 160* thermo, and the same blower/single meth kit.

I am seeing the similar temps as you down here in South Florida. I am not seeing the 220-225 unless i idle for a while, or am in traffic for a little bit prior to doing a few pulls - then I will see that number in the heat of the day.

I added some water wetter - that brought us down by 3-7 degrees.

I picked up a couple of bottle's of Water Wetter from autozone today. Don't know if anyone has used it or if it works but it's supposed to bring down yours temps 10-20 degrees. I guess it's worth a shot.

Why do you have a 160 T-Stat in it?

Not sure if your using factory PCM to control fans? The c5/c6 fan turn on points are really high. Second fan doesn't even kick on till 226 or so. Mine always runs that hot. (not turbo though)

That's what ECS sends with there Novi 1500 kits. Not sure why you would even question running a 160 stat?

its primarily due to how limited the air flow is to the radiator after the installation of the intercooler. a aftermarket radiator and fan will help, but not solve.

There is a thread about cutting and reboxing the frame as a solution to this problem, resulting in significant reductions in temps.

you will not see 20* from ww. expect around 5*.

160* stat in mine it ran cooler than that. Threw a Z06 oil cooler on it and dropped the temps a good bit.

Running a proper shroud will help more than the dewitts and dual fans. I retained the stock shroud by modifying it and my temps are good now. An oil cooler helps a little to. I run about 185 while cruising on the highway, max of 200 in traffic, and about 210 if I have the AC running. With the HPT custom OS you can also command the fans to come on earlier.

so it essentially traps the air down there instead of letting it flow up /to the sides?

what all needs to be removed to get that modified part in there? can it all be done from the top?

Exactly. It forces the air through the condenser and rad just as it was designed for stock. It would mostly be done from the top. Just getting the sides, at the bottom to fit might be tough. Took quite a bit of trimming, checking and trimming more. Bit by bit until it fit best. Want to try to avoid over cutting and having big gaps that let air escape.
Basically the intercooler gets the air through the nose, and the "spoiler" (the one that scrapes everywhere) forces air directly up though the shroud. If you can look under a stock car you will see how well it is set up from the factory, and why they run hotter without it.

sorry to hijack thread - but this is good info directly related to your issue!

ok thanks so much canuk - so what exactly needs to be removed -

intake off blower;
intercooler and the pipe from it to tb.

thats it...then trim/test fit and go?

I'm definitely gonna try doing some of the modding that's being discussed. Just out off curiosity, is my z51 oil cooler the same as the z06 oil cooler? If not would it be worth the upgrade? Also, I bought two bottles of water wetter. Should I use both or just stick with one?

That's about it. If anything else is in the way, you will find out. LOL

Not sure about the coolers. I use a B&M cooler with a fan. I have found water wetter to be a waste of time, but some swear it works.
