01 D1 Trans Am with AC issues
Posting for a friend:
Have an '01 WS6 with heads, cam and procharger. Stock bottom end. My issue is when I turn on the a/c on hot days the car wants to over heat. Turn a/c off and car cools down. A/C blows cold air. Has stock radiator and fan, could this be my issue?

Conan do you have another pic of the rad shroud, I am trying to see where the two pieces come together (upper and lower). It looks like you would have to cut a half circle on the top part then another half circle on the lower part of the rad shroud. Could someone who has done this shed some light on this, and maybe share how they did this?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I have the dual intercoolers mounted under the parking lights/blinkers on the bumper and still have the air dam. I am curious about this extra fan. More info would be appreciated, brand/model and any pics or of the install. Thanks for all the suggestions. I was unaware that the LT1 would work. LT1 radiator or add a fan, which is the better options?

Here's a few more pics, I used a 5" hole saw and drilled the edges and then ground out the rest. The hole does extend into the lower half of the fan shroud. I bolted the two sections together before I started drilling. I used a 7.5'' 440cfm Spal puller fan, but I think I've seen people use up to a 9'' fan. This is where I buy my fans from http://the-fan-man.com/ But Summit or Jegs will have them too.
I would also look at the LT1 radiator Like Alchemist suggested, Its not that expensive and like he said it drops right in. I don't think you can go wrong with doing both the radiator and the second fan.
This will help with the wiring if you add the second fan https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-in...ring-help.html
Here's a couple more pics of the process...

I've considered putting a nozzle in front of the a/c condenser to spray the outside of the a/c condenser with windshield washer fluid to help cool it in severe stop and go conditions with the a/c on. The only time I ever got warm (above 215 degrees) is last year, stuck in non moving traffic, in 95 degree temps with the a/c on. As soon as I started moving 5mph, the temps dropped back down to 200, which is where they always sit at even in the winter.

With your issue maybe an electric waterpump will be better. Your current pump is belt driven so driving slow means slow flow as well. An electric pump can flow better at low RPMs when you may need it.

You might just have a partially stopped up radiator from bugs and such or internally stopped up cores that still have enough flow to cool the engine until the a/c gets turned on. Id remove the radiator and have it cleaned or replace with the LT1 unit like suggested. I have a FMIC and stock radiator with a/c. Im running the single stock procharger fan with no problems in 100deg heat. I realize every setup is different but I cant imagine it being hotter there than it is where I live.

Are you using the stock Procharger fan? If so, ditch that thing and go dual Spal.
There's a guy in the sales section with exactly what you need, I was going to buy the 9" from him but ended up buying new.

Thanks for all the replies and help. The car has 42k on it. Has 12k since procharger was installed in 2002. I rarely drive the car but it would be nice to drive on summer nights without having issues. I do believe it is the stock procharger fan.
I see 2 options and am unsure which to try. Option 1 is the added fan. Some say it helps, others don't have the same luck. Option 2 is a new radiator. With this option I could go with an LT1 or a Spectra. Both seem to generate great results.
It comes down to best bang for the buck. I'm not sure what all is needed to install the extra fan, ex. wiring/mounting kit. Price looks to be around $40 for the fan and the extras would bring cost to $80ish. New LT1 radiator from Advanced is $96 after tax or the Spectra is $108.
decisions...decisions...

fyi i have discovered something , you dont want a lt1 radiator if your procharged , their is a port on the bottom drivers side that hits the inlet hat . Now maybe some dont but from my research they all should have it there.
So i just ordered a cu1485 off amazon for 108 shipped. Its a v6 radiator , its thick like the lt1 rad but only has the ports a ls1 car uses . So nothing has to be capped and its a direct drop in .
