Default Switching from nitrous to a turbo, advice please

Since my engine is out to be freshened and have a couple of small changes done I thought it was a good time to make some big changes. The car put down 525whp on motor and 740whp on a 200 shot. The car has run 10.00 at 136mph with a 6 speed. I have since swapped the 6 speed for a built TH400 with a break and upgraded the Nitrous system in preparation for a 300-400 shot. My goal for this car is to run mid 5's in the 1/8th.

I would rather run a turbo so since the engine is out I'm thinking why not now? I want a front mount single. The car is being built to perform at the track but has tags on it so it will see the street. I want it to be reliable but on the street but track times are what's most important. I know nearly nothing about turbos except that I won't be filling bottles so I'm looking for feedback.

I know I'll need bigger injectors, a cam change and lower compression to start with but what turbo size and details are you guys thinking I'll need? The heads will come next to be upgraded, I'm running 317's ported by BTR.

I have looked around the forum and other than hand fabricating a system I haven't found a thread (I'm pretty sure it's there...) about how to keep costs down on a turbo build. I want the parts that really matter to be quality but if i can save some money by getting a cheaper cold side/hot side set up which one is good to get? I thought I read about people using a ebay set up with a good turbo and such...any help would be great. I don't like buying stuff over and over so I want to get the parts that will get me where i want to be up front, "future proof" if you will.

Also if more details about my car are needed just ask what you need to know and I'll post it.

Thanks

Very true. I'm emailing with Casey from Huron and I have dealt with Tick before, they did my cage, and those are some good guys.

What's your motor consist of? 317s matched with decent intake and cam will do what you want. Talk to Lil Jon for turbo cam. I would definitely be opting for a T6 turbo kit from Huron speed. But to knowon what you need to get we need to know your setup currently. At a minimum.
80 lb injectors
Twin 255s
Goodvalve springs
Bov and wastegates
Stand up rad and fans if you go T6 from Huron
Boost/fuel pressure/wideband gauges
Maybe new gears depending on yours

There is a sticky of the budget minded turbo build. But know that a turbo build will be expensive either buying cheap parts now and upgrading later or buying the good stuff now

A set of stock 317s and ls6 intake would let you see your goals.
S480 cast wheel with a cover
80-100# injectors
PTC billet 9.5"
LJMS cam
divided hotside.. Dual JGS gates
BOV

ETC... Tons of setups to copy from... Just pick a few, look them over, and get to work.

I'd recommend doing your own kit or finding someone to help.

Engine-Callies crank, compstar rods, diamond pistons, Vic Jr with an elbow, fast 92, Edelbrock fuel rails, 42# injectors (I know I would be upgrading these going turbo), LS7 lifters, Harland Sharp rockers, Patriot Gold dual valve springs, Thunder Racing cam .248/.254 .618/.624 110LSA (I know I'd be changing this too).
Driveline-9" Rear,Moser 35 spline axles,12mm ARP studs,Strange 3rd member,4.11 Yukon gears (pretty sure these would get changed),Strange 9" Spool,UMI double adjustable lower control arms,UMI single adjustable panhard bar,Founders panhard bar relocation kit,UMI body mount adjustable torque arm with driveshaft safety loop,Competition Engineering rear shocks and
Weld-in subframe connectors.
Fuel system-Dual Walbro 255's and Racetronix hotwire kit.

That's most of it...Ya T6 for sure, Casey was thinking a twin set up would be best and I agree but my wallet doesn't!

Ya thanks. I guess it'll take some homework.

Things you will need to change you already know. So your on the right track. Twins would be nice but a billet 76/80 will do everything you want since your more track oriented and on a budget like everyone else. What heads do you have?

Casey will be able to get you all set-up! If you need anything else I am always here as well. Thanks again for the support!

Ya I think I'll need to change my converter too. The heads are 317's ported by BTR. Those are on the list to be upgraded too. If I end up staying with the nitrous I'll upgrade the heads. I want a turbo that will get me to my goal for now but that maybe I can go a bit faster down there road if I feel the need, we always want to go faster. But if I get a kit that gets me to my goal and I only have to upgrade the turbo to go faster that's fine too. I just don't want to have to change the whole kit.

Thanks Jon, I have been emailing with him. My budget just took a huge hit though. I bought a camper over the weekend.

Then that Huron kit will be right up your alley. Those heads will do well on a turbo setup
