Default ls9 style gasket for small bore

Hi folks,

I've built out a 3.82 bore (.040 over) 4.8 engine and I'm a bit uncomfortable running a bigger bore ls9 gasket.

I know lots of folks do without issue but it seems to me it would leave quite a bit of "crevice gap" due to the larger bore

would o ringing help fill that empty space? or is there a similar MLS composition gasket that would fit this bore size better?

thanks!

LS1 gaskets. 3.910 bore. But just keep in mind how much power people have put through ls9 gaskets on 5.3/4.8 bore motors. More layers are more gooder when things start flexing and moving around.

I fought this for the same reason on my alum 5.3.

Tried the FelPro that fit the bore. They failed at 19 psi.

LS1 gaskets failed at 15 psi

So put the ls9 on, 18 psi. All good.
Disassembled for upgrade, the ls9's showed zero signs of distress.

They make 5 layer small bore cometics, buy they aren't cheap. I'm going to take 2 sets of ls1 gaskets, drill out the rivets, remove the middle spacer out of one set and make my own small bore 5 layer .070" gaskets for a total cost of $60 ($15 a gasket) http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-CHEV...9VJp7o&vxp=mtr

Thanks Ron. great feedback. I think the main issue is "crevice volume" which would hurt emissions but not make any difference on performance

did you notice that the space between the gasket fire ring and the edge of the bore had "filled up" with carbon deposits?

I'll be sticking with the LS9 too many success storied.

thanks for all the feedback.

I honestly only had 20 passes and a few hundred street miles on them. So no buildup at all. It's also on E85 which doesn't make too much soot.

I resisted using them because I have an alum block. But in the end, "they" were all right, it's the gasket to use. :-)
