So I purchased a 5.3 LS cast block engine, done about 85000 miles supposedly. Now just need to get some bits. Are masterpower turbos any good? Easily available here. Would these be a good size for my requirements?

Just buy Borg Warner. They're cheap, readily available and very reliable.

Whatever turbo you choose, make sure it's got water cooled bearings. Some of the ones posted above don't. You'll need cooling more turbo cooling than most.

Definitely support the weight of the turbo(s). With all the bouncing around, your manifold will not.

Also definitely include an oil cooler in your build.

Go for a higher AR on the exhaust housing since you're RPM range will have no problem making boost at constant rpm. This will help keep your exhaust pressure lower.

Go for the largest water intercooler you can manage. High charge temp will cause detonation and most intercoolers are designed for short bursts and get heat soaked.

You're probably going to need to go higher than 10-12 lbs of boost to reach your target.

Consider a colder rated spark plug to dissipate heat better.

If you have the option for Ethanol, go for it. it will run cooler.

Not sure about BOV setup. I would guess in a race boat, you're constantly on and off the throttle instead of constant RPM. You may have a hard time maintaining boost. Maybe consider doubling up on your BOVs. Consider an engine management system that can give you anti-lag when you back off the throttle.

I prefer single turbo setups. Fewer parts, less points of failure, no chance for harmonics and turbo surging.

My 2 cents. Best of luck. Be careful, lost a car buddy in a race boat.

Thanks for that. So could I run twin intercoolers, one for each turbo, these be any good?

And these turbos. Would they handle my 3 or 4 races a year or just rubbish and not worth the risk?

They're chines knock off turbos...they may last, they may not. They may perform, they may not.

Also that cooler looks terribly small. There are few downsides to oversizing a cooler.

Check out oscs's Datsun thread, he recently bought a decent sized core very cheap

So for headers to suit the boat am I best to use the truck headers or buy a set of turbo headers from ebay or somewhere?

Whatever works easiest for you really.

factory stuff is easy because they're cheap and robust. So if they work for you, they'll make a lot of sense over more expensive stuff. They just dont always look as nice

So have been quoted some turbos locally, would these be the right size for my application? Some people experienced with setting up twin turbos in race boats have said to run quite large turbos with 50mm waste gates, not be concerned about low down boost or spooling up as we will be sitting at 5000-6000rpm most of the time and easy to get going. Would these be considered large or not? Another guy is quoting me borg warners, I havnt got the specs yet but twice the price-thoughts please

A pair of them might do 700 at a push, but IMO they're on the small side for a 6.0

And that really isnt a cheap price...for what appears to be a really cheap unproven turbo

A quick google brings up this as a NZ supplier of BW and other units ?

Thanks for that, that was what I wanted to know, well looks like I will have to pay the money and go with the borgwarners warners @ $1650+gst each. Turbocare in Christchurch have set up 3 or 4 race boats, vk56 twin turbo and 2jz twin turbo are some of them and they go real good and have done so for a good while now, apparently they know what they are talking about which is what I need as I know f all

I have been told I need a 3 stage cooler, not cheap. I have the motor at engine builders, haven't seen it for myself yet. Got a new cam/springs and pushrods coming, gone with the borg warner turbos, shoud have them later in the week.
