First fire up and burping the coolant system...

Finally got it off the jacks and removed the mountain of crap I had piled on it. Fitted the hood and was ready for a cruise around the block. Forgot I needed the transbrake wired up to engage reverse with this trans. So I'll have to take it it's maiden voyage another time.

Also for the record my trans brake solenoid wouldn't work with a supplied 12v and the TB switch inline with the ground. For some reason voltage back feeds that way? I have continuity to ground on both sides of the trans brake solenoid. So that was a few hours wiring work down the crapper.

Glovebox wiring almost done.

Congrats on getting it fired up! Set-up looks great and should fly. I still want to do something with my HVAC so I can fit the Goldbox in there like you did...way better than how I have mine now.
That's the best use of a cutting board I have seen to date, brilliant!

Made some progress this weekend and got to cruise around a bit.

Had a new windshield installed and spent a good 4 hours buffing the whole car with rubbing compound. Sun reflects so brightly off this white paint you can’t see all hail dings/damage. Who says you can’t polish a turd? Matching rear wheels with 255/60 drag radials soon to come. Need to raise the coil overs up front some too.

Installed these $11 pre-filters since my aif filters are in the wheel wells. No idea if they will hurt power, but sure installed easy and made me feel better.

Wired in the $18 fuel pressure sensor and $24 Ethanol sensor. All setup nice and compact on the surge tank.

Had the car running on 91 initially. Cruised to the local E85 station and topped off with E85. Ethanol sensor registered 34% and the tune seems almost perfect. Was about .5 richer than the 91 octane tune. But I believe I got that sorted in the flex fuel settings.

Currently have no rear brakes installed. Cruising around on stock discs up front only. Needs and alignment and tag and it will be ready for some testing. (possibly rear brakes).

I couldn’t resist standing on it a little on the way home and it seems like it’s going to be a total lag monster. Rolling into it in 3rd I hit 3.8lbs by 4k. That’s at 23* timing and 12.5 AFR.

Bums me out, but I don’t think PTC got the converter right this time. With previous setups they always nailed it. Too much of a hassle to remove it at this point. PTC 10” Converter was supposed to flash to 3800-4k with a mild cam 9:1 4.8. No way that would happen. With the 5.3 I’m seeing right around a 3400 flash. Currently has 3.73 gears and a 26” tire. Plan to go with a 27” tire and 2.73’s originally. Might have to swap to some smaller turbos to make that work.

If it were mainly a drag car I would in a heartbeat, but I don’t even have a cage in this, need it to be semi responsive. I could deal with being all in by 4-4500 or so but barely making 4lbs by 4k+ is pretty bad. Honestly though I haven’t looked into it at all. My gates may not be sealing or I could have huge boost leaks. I’ve got like 25 minutes set time so far, need a little more time before I can make any calls.

My car with the 4.8 and twin 7268's seems to be in the same boat. I have probably 5-600 miles on the set up so far. It runs pretty good on about 20psi, but its totally dead below 4500 from a stop. On the highway from 70-75mph in 3rd, about 3200rpm, it will light off pretty quick. I am going to toss a trans brake in my car in the next couple weeks and see what I can get it to do.

What converter is in yours again? I was really hoping a 4000ish stall like I requested would take care of the laziness, esp now that I’m running the 5.3. I do have what I'm thinking is a 3.73 gear in the rear (26" tire) and the original plan was a super loose converter and a 2.73 gear and 27" tire. Added load may help bump the stall up enough to be more useful. I did tell PTC i would be running the 2.73/27" combo when they spec'd the converter.

These “T3” housings are a big mystery too. They look like the CM14 monster housings that come on the T3 H35’s. They were listed as a .83 AR. Which I’m pretty sure it total BS. I’d guess more like 1.0 AR. Are yours the .68 T4 housings?

Everything about my set up is less than ideal. Small motor, big cam, big turbos, tight-ish converter. Its a Circle D 3B, supposed to be 3600 stall, I can foot brake 3-5psi at 3000rpm but it still won't move from a dig. Also running 3.27 gears and a 27" tire. I have the 0.81 T4's on mine. Both my compressors are seeping oil a bit already too. Going to see how they act on the brake but I will probably end up putting some GT35's or equivalent on it. If it will make 10psi on the brake it should be able to cut a decent 60'.

Just when I saw some light at the end of the tunnel…

The newly overhauled $1000 th400 appears to have been overhauled incorrectly. Cruising to tag office it just started slipping. Also noticed it was really grabby at idle almost like one of the clutch packs isn’t letting go. Cruising around 40 the trans fluid creeped up to 170* or so and it was undriveable at that point. Once it cooled down I cruised back home. Fluid was a little dark but not horrible. Found some very small glittery material, but not what I’d consider a major part failure. Seems like it was put together incorrectly so I get to pull the bastard. Also the out of state seller signed the title in the wrong spot. So I have no tag and I have to hunt him down to resign the title. Not a good day!

I would guess intermediate clutch snap ring broke thru the lugs in the case, a new case will be required. If you're not running an intermediate band you can use a case saver, that will help the next case.

Those look VERY familiar. Do you possibly have the trans setup with no low or second gear engine braking? I sheared the lugs off my TCI full comp TH400 trans back in the day twice before I found out what was causing it. From a roll I would let off the gas and then stomp it. Felt great but was told because of the no braking design it was like neutral dropping it and it would shear the inner lugs off the case.

I was just cruising at 40 or so when it started getting hot and freewheeling. It's literally done nothing but cruise around the neighborhood and to the gas station. Rolled into it in 3rd once, but no downshifting. I'll definitely put a more street friendly VB in it now that it's out. I'm thinking it may have been broken from the start. I should have dropped the pan before install.

I do not... the seller picked it up today and is dropping it by one of our local Th400 builders monday. Not sure how it's gonna play out yet.
