Default Custom turbo setup questions

Here's the deal, I had originally planned on installing a Raymer turbo kit with a T76gtq on my newly built low compression 408 motor. But after a lot of comments made the past couple of days, I have decided that the Raymer kit is not going to suit my needs, especially with what seems to be lacking support from QMP (not trying to bash Rob or QMP, just stating what I have seen the past couple of days)

Instead I have decided to build a custom kit from the ground up using either the T76gtq or possibly a GT42. It will be using full tubular headers with either the turbo mounted on the driver side near where the alternator would be (QMP Style) or over on the passenger side by the battery mount (Speed Inc style). By quickly looking over the car, I think mounting it on the driver side would work out better. I want to have a 2.5 inch crossover run in front of the motor just under the radiator shroud into a Y just before the turbo. Then I plan on running the downpipe (3.5 in) in front of the motor down by the bottom of the radiator support and out underneath the passenger side header. May need to use ovalized pipe for enough clearance between radiator and motor. I hope to be able to do this without relocating the radiator and using a BMR k-member.

I just wanted to see what everyone else thought and if anyone had any pics of custom setups of forward facing headers. I want to avoid running the crossover behind/below the motor and trans to avoid clearance issues. I also plan on doing this and keeping ABS and A/C

stainless works i believe can get ahold of that alt. bracket for you.

best of luck to your system.. get in touch with rice eter and 69 firebird (i think) they are two that have made DIY single turbo kits.

I've already designed my own alt bracket I'll be using. Trying to do this completely from the ground up with all my own parts.

I'll send 69firebird and rice etr PMs.

Thanks

If your going with a 408, no sense in using a 76GTQ. The exhaust turbine is to small for that application if you plan to make BIG hp. Stick to the GT42-76T with the T6 frame at the minimum. A PTE-88 would be even a better choice and would let you rpm the motor out significantly more. Read here Click Here . This will help explain why its crucial to pick the right unit.

Would the GT42 or the PTE-88 have good streetability. From talking to APE I was under the assumption that a PTE-88 would be way too much for the street and that a GT42 would be borderline...the car will be a 6-speed if that matters and running DFI or Big Stuff aftermarket ECM

Well not sure why APE told you that cause that is simply not the case. But no the GT42 is not to much for the street at all. Heck we are using them on daily driven street supra with less then half the cubes. The GT42 is basically the same turbo as a T76GTQ, or GTS. The GT42-76T uses the same cold side as the ones mentioned and the 76 GTS turbine wheel comes from the GT42...hehe. The PTE88 would only spool 200-300 rpms slower, but with a 408 CI you don't want a fast spooling turbo, the car will never hook...hehe. Lag is sometimes a good thing. Also if you shoot for BIG hp you are going to go past the 76's and GT42's choke line. They simply will not supply enough air efficiently.
