Default Biggest Downpipe Through K-member?

I'm having a little trouble with my current downpipe situation and i'm trying to avoid coming out the fender and at the same time not bottling up my PT88. Currently its just a 4" pipe dumped straight down to the ground. It's fine while driving around normally, but opening it up is starting to melt some of the plastic under the bumper and sitting at idle puts a lot of heat back in the engine bay as well as a wonderful exhaust smell in the car.

The plan is to stick the biggest pipe i can through the K member and run a full exhaust with an electric cut out just past the firewall. I've already had it looked it and the exhaust shop thinks even a 3" pipe would be super tight. i was hoping for at least 3.5" if not 4"

Now ive heard of people squeezing a 4" pipe through and some 3.5s im just wondering how everyone is doing it. I have a BMR turbo K member (this one)http://www.bmrsuspension.com/?page=p...260&superpro=0 with stock ls1 mounts. I know if i change up the mounts a little i can make some more room i just want to know what kind of setup some of you other guys have done. Thanks for any help.

What kit are you running? I managed to fit a 4" downpipe through my stock k member.

Huron speed T4 V2 non-ac.

Do you happen to have a picture of that?

Should easily fit 4" with that k member. I would like to see pics of this 4" through the stock kmember though. I've never seen anyone run 4" on the stock k.

Biggest Downpipe Through K-member?-photo521.jpg

4 inch squeezed in no problems. I can get a picture of the piping but there isn't much to see. Huron T4 kit with a s475- 4" hooker (max flow?)muffler in the cat location, dumped near rear axle. Very nice sound and quiet inside of the car.

here's what i'm working with. when the tech held a 3" pipe in there it was pretty tight plus he mentioned it would likely run very close to the starter and the heat could wear it out. unfortunately i don't have any pipe laying around that i can show the clearance but you can see the 4" DP in the background of a few pictures that might give you an idea of how big the space is.

that's where your extra room is coming from. your passenger side pipes go up instead of down.... genius.

Yep. I wanted to be able to retain a/c and have a full exhaust. Worked out very well.

I had to drop my front sway bar an inch, and have my non-turbo k-member modified (they sell turbo K-members that make it better) but I was able to fit a full 4" downpipe and 4" exhaust all the way back to my 3" muffler where it was reduced in my BW S484 turbo.

Made 870 RWHP with exhaust fully on. I dropped the exhaust off at the downpipe and picked up a few pounds of boost and it put down 1,008 RWHP. I am confident that if it was retricted further to 3" at any point in the downpipe, that a much greater reduction of power would have been seen.

i've seen people just remove the sway bar all together but i'm not a fan of that. what did you do to drop it an inch?

I bought one inch thick blocks of aluminum in the shape of the area where the sway bar bolts to the car and drilled holes through them and got longer bolts to go through. Basically just made my own spacers to drop the sway bar an inch.

Our turbo K allows for up to a 5" downpipe to be run on either side of the motor. But it is intended for it to run to the outside of the motor mount, not between it and the block

ah, I see my problem then. The huronspeed manifolds and crossover eliminate a lot of that space.

Did you ever got a pipe through? I have the same BMR turbo K, and a huron speed kit. I'm just worried about being able to get the 3" pipe through? As you said we can't use the areas that BMR intended for the down pipe, as our manifolds and crossover pipes run through there. It is nice to have all that space around the crossover, but I hope I can get my down pipe through. My 3" downpipe goes through my stock K, just fine, thought it would be a no brainer, but this K member may be even tighter than the stock, specifically in that area between the motor mount stand and the oil pan. I'm going to install it to get rid on my ugly stock K this weekend.

haven't made an attempt yet. i'm going back and forth between modifying the manifolds to allow it fit through the K or just send it out the fender.
