Default GT45 Turbo Upgrade Time

Hi, I dont post here too much but I lurk here alot. I have a truck 5.3 with a Z06 cam and DNA GT45 69 mm turbo. It is practically brand new with maybe 100 miles and idle tune time on it. I want to go bigger and run low boost..lets say 10-12 lbs and have good RWHp #'s. There are so many choices of turbos and also my radiator is close. I wish I could just bolt one on to the hotside without messing with my DP which has a 3.5 vband. I know a CX Racing has a 76mm or 80 mm turbo that has the same Exh V band. Another choice is a ON3 84mm billet, a VSracing 7875 billet or a Vs 77/83. So chime in on your experience

i switched to a 7875. the outlet needed to be changed a bit and the cold side needed a little rework.

it's actually smaller than the 69mm gt45, physically

you can see the rework i had to do on one of the last few pages of my build thread

Wow that exhaust housing looks small or the Compressor side makes it look that way compared to the gt45? Very nice work on your build I might say

Why dont you see if you can get what you want out of that turbo first? It may be all you need. Push it up a few more PSI to 15 ish and I bet that turbo will perform the same as the other turbos you are looking at running at 10-12 psi.

Because I dont want to run meth and if I do someday I want to really turn it up and make close to 700hp which the Gt45 will do 500+ RWHP

Not too many replies but the CX Racing Gt45 80mm looks like the same Exhaust housing as the little gt45 69mm but from pictures the compressor side kind of looks big??? Im not looking for a super fast spooling turbo but im very Leary of the little 3" exhaust outlet and a 2.5" compressor outlet on the 7875 vsr or on3.

give it a shot if less rework makes it the more appealing option

the turbine housing is similar, but is V banded to the CHRA instead of the bolt/tab type retainer...so it wasn't a direct swap for me (wastegate on the turbine housing)

but i dont think you can compare inlet/outlet sizes and have a complete picture of how much air a given turbo can move. there is all sorts of **** to consider, blade angle, number and length, aspect ratio of the volute...they are complex lil things

I think and im leaning towards the VSR billet 7875 or the new 84mm ON3 looks like they will put down some power and also be a great fit. I want a turbo that is mello for street driving but I can turn it up for those special occasions .

Thanks to the guys who said turn it up. Im going to do that instead of reinventing my setup. Meth would be the next step?? What company should I look into since im really a novice at this.

Yeah I would push the turbo you have some more before changing so quickly. There's been some pretty impressive results with cars running that same exact combo once properly setup.

From the responses I got Im taking all your advice. Ok now school me on boost controllers that can drive around on low boost and with a switch go to full boost or is that not possible or do I just run on spring? Im telling you im new at this stuff vs BBC's.

Another option is to email Viren at VSRacing and ask him which turbo is a direct swap for the Chinese GT45. He sells the GT45 and other turbos.

Already talked to him. The Little Gt is all by itself. My turbo has maybe 100 miles with idle tune time only so Im going to stick with it because I would have to do more fab work to put something else on. If it goes I'll get a new one then.

Change of plans. I bought the On3 84mm billet off of Slowsedan so that is getting fab in now. The Gt45 68mm will be for sale I think along with all the extras for it??? The 84 should go good..

Air restriction is air restriction. If you run the same psi you will get about the same hp minus any gains from thermal efficiency which will be negated by increased spool time. If you aren't leaning hard on the turbo it's a worthless upgrade. Most upgrade their turbo based on it stops making as much hp per psi increase. Let's say you run 13psi and if you go to 14 psi it makes 20 more hp and it keeps at that rate until 18 psi then it drops to 15 hp increase per psi that's when you should upgrade since you are off the efficiency map. To each their own though just a little insight
