Default Th400 First drive impression.

So I finally finished swapping over to the Th400, got the brake wired up and went for a spin. The very first thing I noticed was how the converter felt, of course I didn't expect it to be tight....but not quite this loose either. So after driving for a while and stopping a few times to make sure there were no leaks, I figured it was time to see two things...one was is the tranny right....and two...how continuous power felt. The transmission is brutally firm on the1st to 2nd shift....going into 3rd...while there's no slip...its not quite as hard shifting. So how did it pull? Im hoping it's not because I haven't driven the car in 4 months...but the car feels retarded fast. I wasn't expecting it to feel like it did at ALL. So after cruising around town, I went home and got on the transbrake to see what the converter would actually stall to. It went 5200 and made almost 16psi instantly, here's the vid.

The old saying for a TH400 is that they bang into second and glide into third...

Yea, I'm now beginning to wonder if my clutch was slipping when I still had the t56...car seems to pull MUCH harder now.

It's a PTC unit. I may have altered the stall speed (slightly) inadvertently, as I restricted the converter feed circuit to keep from killing my thrust bearings.

I've seen some guys running that hyguard, seems to be some good stuff. I was wanting to do something like a Dana, but even with me building the tranny...it cost me quite a bit to do the swap. I had planned on having the rear end and tires by opening day.....bit its not going to happen. So unfortunately I'm going to have to rock the 10 bolt and these 315s for a little while longer.

And I'm sure these high gears I'm using might have a hand in how the converter feels too (2:73)

I'm not sure that they offer many turbo friendly gear sets for the Dana's. What would you go to? Like around a 3.08 or 3.23 if you swapped? Anyway sweet car and enjoy your newly found consistency.

Would likely stay around a 3.00, wouldn't want to go much lower than that. The only reason I say Dana is, supposedly they rob a little less power than a 9 inch. And thanks for the compliment.

What PTC unit is it? PN? What Ecu are you using? I limit my RPM to 3400-3600 or so on the brake. Once boost starts building it will fly past 5k as well without the 2-step active. I'm under 4% slip thru the traps at 6200rpm with the 9.5" PTC (14 stator). Trying to launch in 1st over 5k and 16ish lbs probably won't work well... may blow that rear end in a hurry too! Might try foot brake stuff till you can get a rearend under there. Also the taller you go on the gearing the weaker they get. A 2.7x is a pretty weak gear in general...even in a 9".

Good luck!

Lol, there will be no transbrake action with this current rear end. Only got on the brake to see what the converter would go...and how quickly boost came on line. And btw, I am NOT a fan of having to use the Transbrake to reverse, other than that I'm happy with the build. The part number is hard to read.

I doubt it. Your just feeling what it's like to never get out of boost.

that really aint that bad looking for how much power you were putting through it

my vote is 9" ---parts are cheaper and more common and you have more headroom if you wanna get silly with the boost

Tci. It's an ok brake, I just don't care for having to hold a transbrake button just to reverse.

Yea, clutch had a few miles on it too. Yea I can dig that about the 9 inch, not really sure what I'm going to do just yet. Right now, I'm in paydown mode lol.

What shifter do you have? You can wire the trans brake into the reverse light switch and get reverse, but I would use a toggle or something to shut it off at the track so if you go into neutral on the big end you don't accidently get reverse

My vote is a 35 spline 9 inch!
