Default First outing (kind of a mess)

Finally was able to get my turbo sbe 5.3 Nova to the track. I entered NMCA True Street at the track about 20 minutes from my house. I drove it there, competed and drove it home. I was hoping for 110 in the 1/8. I had some major boost controller issues (my fault) where the boost curve took four seconds to reach the target and the target was 2.5-3 psi short of where I wanted it to be. It still ran 7.05 at 106.5 and I ended up taking 8th out of 36 cars, so it's not all bad. I'm looking forward to gettin back now that the boost controller is straightened out. I'd like to run low 6s at 110+. We'll see. Overall a very good time even with the issues. Thanks to everyone that's helped me along the way.

Congrats man, I'm sure it'll move out when you get some of the boost controller issues sorted. Whats the setup and how much boost? Pump/meth?

car looks good. don't worry you will get the bugs worked out . its amazing how many hours of work you can do to get things right after a single 7 second 1/8 mile run when you thought it was ready before the run. lol.

I think we'll do better next time around. It's an all there '70 Nova (weighed 3460 with me) s475/83 on a 5.3, 243s, JFR 218 cam, truck intake and TB. Th400 with a $450 PTC, 3.31 geared 12 bolt and Caltracs and full 4" exhaust all the way out behind the rear tire. It's on E85 and I was shooting for 18.5-19 psi, but my error in programming only got me 16 psi and that was after 4 seconds into the run. That's all fixed now and I'm making 17.5 in one second. I knew it was a slug for the first 300 feet, but the speed still shows some promise all things considered.

Very well done for a first outing. Shows it's not your first rodeo. Good luck on the next visit. I have no doubt you'll reach your goal.

Def a good looking car, be interesting to see how it runs with the boost problem fixed. Good outing even with the problems.

Good stuff, sounds like it runs well and with time and tuning you'll get her in the 6's for sure, how did you launch, footbrake or transbrake? What stall you running and Trans? looks awesome!!

I'm guessing you had the gate pressure turned way down? And that's pretty solid, considering the issues you had.

Yah, I was footbraking it. It's a th400 and it'll go to about 3,100 and build 3.5-4 psi.

Thanks. Yes, the gate pressure is what was jacked. It was the first time trying a new strategy and it bit me!

Was the strategy to use the gate pressure as a traction aid? It can be used as a poor mans traction controller, just takes a little time to dial it in.

Long story short, I run the Holley system and was using closed loop map based control. My activation threshold was too low and then it was really hunting to try and achieve the target I wanted. Plus, Im using the compressor as my pressure source, which is probably far from optimal when using map based control because the pressure is never constant (like it would be with onboard air). The ecu did exactly what it was commanded to do. I just gave it some bad orders. Lol. I guess it really wasn't long story short, it you get the point. I can definitely see it used as a traction aid though, seeing the car only 60 footed 1.89!

Hey,
Not a mess at all! It was a tuning outing.
Very few hit a home run first time out.
I never have.
So nowhere to go but up from here.
Car looks great btw.

Yea, it definitely helped your traction lol. Probably felt like it took DAYS to spool. Half a second seems like an eternity, especially at the track.

In theory you should go 113 easy if not faster, my pops Malibu has a very similar combo. Same weight, billet 72/83 and JFR 215/112* we went 6.35 @ 111 on about 18psi. Running hi ram/853 heads and circle D converter with a 3.25 gear.

Thats about right where I'd like to end up. Anything after that's a bonus. Here's a shot of the datalog. You can see the EXTREMELY gradual boost curve in the top panel. Now it pretty much follows the target. I knew it was a slug for the first 300 feet or so. But in True Street you can't touch the car at all. Basically air up/down tires. That's it. So I had to wait to pull the logs and correct the issue.

How would they know that you did something as simple as increasing the gate pressure?

No laptops. In don't have onboard air, so the only way to change anything would be a tune change.

Ya I wouldn't consider this a mess at all. A mess is when you grenade a tranny or throw a rod out the side of the block. **** this mistake didn't even cost you money. I'd maybe call it a hiccup at worst. Congrats on the run and may many more and faster runs come.
