Default Turbo selection

On a SBE 5.3 with 228/588 cam, 799 heads, through a tremec magnum a g body cutlass I have two turbo options. 7275 .96, journal bearing, cast wheel precision turbo or 7875 1.15 ceramic ball bearing, billet wheel comp turbo. I am not looking to make all of the horse power, looking for the 550 to 600 whp range with decent street manners. Car will be daily driven in nice weather. My main concern is the 1.15 a/r will be too big/laggy. Which turbo would you guys run?

Hard to go wrong with precision. Usually their "smaller" turbos out flow the bigger comp turbos. If you got both already try them back to back and let us know. If not go precision, i dont think the 1.15 ar is too big. Matter a fact every company seems to measure it differently. So 1.15 in 1 brand could be .96 from a different company.

Find one with a compressor map that ends around 75-80lbs/min

for about 500w on 5.3L I chose S364 which flows around 72lb/min iirc, but the engine is too large to touch 70. It will do 60~ though.

Be warned. Precision makes the power, but aren't exactly reliable .

well this opens a can of worms, I've been reading forums about precision and making the decision more difficult

Ur cam is too big

Here is my old combo. Cast 72/83 Borg Warner with a 215/215 112* camshaft all in a she 5.4 with stock 853’s. Went 9’s easy and spinning from the launch. I know for a fact it would of went 9.50’s or faster had I got the car to leave right and add some more boost.

sharp car, definitely dig the color. I know the cam isn't optimal, but it's in the engine and I'll run it until i can swap it out. Isn't 112 a little tight for a turbo cam? Thank you

Even with a 112 LSA, that cam has -9 degrees of overlap. LSA is only a piece of the puzzle.

For anyone else looking at turbo sizes, I called comp turbos (great customer service) and they said between 1.0 and 1.15 is the sweet spot for a 5.3 with a divided housing and .96 on an undivided housing
