Talking Twin gt35 5.3, couple questions regarding the ar

So I'm building a 5.3 swapped g body. mvb th400 with a t brake, Megasquirt gold box, 222/226 .603/.595 114+3 cam (it was ground for a single turbo but it's in the car now so I'm rolling with it), head studs and a set of twins on 93 pump gas/meth. It's going to be a street/strip car with a little more focus on the "strip" side of things, 28" tire and undecided on gears at the moment. I want to run 9.99 or better in the 1/4, but the faster the better. I'll be using VS Racing twin billet GT35 turbos with a t3 flange and 1.06 ar. Viren from VSR recommended I use the 1.06 ar over the .82. My question is, who has used twin GT35s (or something similar sized) with a 1.06 ar on a 4.8/5.3? If so, what did you think about them? Dyno numbers? Track ET/mph? How much boost and what rpm did you see full boost? If you used them with the .82 or smaller ar, do you wish you would have used the 1.06?

Is the 1.06 is a T4? I run the .63 T3's on billet 64mm GT35's and they are a light switch on a dumpy 8.9:1 5.3. I wish I would have went with the .82ar. But a T3 VS a T4 is a huge difference. Not sure I'd want a 1.06 T4 on it. Not aware of anyone running one on a gt35 though.

Interested in your results. Viren told me the .82 is what I wanted on a 5.7...... not sure why that would be if he’s telling you 1.06 on a 5.3

No Sir the 1.06 is a T3. I wouldn’t think the spool would be so bad being T3, I just don’t want to run out of steam on the big end of the track.

Odd. I told him I was going to run the .82 but I didn’t want to run out of steam on the big end of the track. That’s when he said he’d recommend the 1.06 ar. I don’t think the spool would be so bad being they’re T3 frame. But then agin this is my first turbo build so I’m unsure.

Forcefed ran some pretty good times with his baby a/r versions, my goal is 9’s also with my setup. From what I was told these should make plenty of power to get me there. Fingers crossed for both of us lol

Well I guess either ar will get me to my goal. If I go 1.06 then I'll feel better about upgrading in the future. Maybe a 6.0 or even a forged 370 so I can really turn the wick up. Definitely fingers crossed for the both of us! I guess when the time comes to order, I'll confirm with him if I need the 1.06 or .82. Hopefully more people will chime in with some results.

Stock48 ran gt35s? I missed that one... got a link?

Its mainly just going to effect reaponse time. The exh wheels are done on these with a 5.3 around 850 and thats tapped with a manual trans. pushing it well past its happy spot. U cant just slap on a larger housing and expect it to make more on a larger engine with a baby exh wheel.

i pan to take mine out this weekend, I’ll have some data on spool time and driving characteristics. I’ll post some videos and data In my build thread, and I can here if I remember lol

Ok so staying with the 5.3, will the 1.06 ar be fine with a t3?

I wouldn't worry about the 1.06 T3 then. Id like to see a pic though next to the standard T3 housings. I didn't know such a thing existed. (not that I'm in the loop on china turbos) I'm kind of weary when it comes to china stuff and AR sizes though. Seems like they just make $hit up!

Here was my ".84 housing" T3 that came on my 72/68 REV9 turbo next to my .63 T3 gt35... It's friggn huge! Easily larger than the 1.0+ T4's i've played with.

Good Lord that’s big! So I guess the 1.06 it is then. I’ll post some pics when they show up and maybe you can get an idea of how big they are.

Well I tried to get done useful data today. Unfortunately about the 3rd pull in while dialing in my afr it decided to blow through 2nd gear. 80e with hd2 kit. 8# 14*. I’ll say this, they spool a lot slower than I was expecting. I’ll hsve the trans rebuilt and t brake in in tomorrow, then I can post some videos. All I have now is a 1st gear pull with a failed attempt at a 1-2 shift at the end haha

Trans slipping and not loading the engine could have a lot to do with slower spool. Sounds like something wasnt right in there. Also 8lbs and 14* is pretty mild timing. What are you running from 1 to 5psi? Should be able to run darn close to na timing to 5pi or so to help light them off. Then drop the timing hard after depending on ur combo and fuel.

Yea just trying to be safe. Afr was mid 12’s till about 3-4# then drops to 11.0, was running about 20* untill 2-3#, tapers down to 12* at 4K rpm and then back up to 14* by 5500, shifts at 6500. It was going pretty rich still after about 5,500. Was getting into the high 9’s for afr. I have 3.73 gears and 28’s.

Well I appreciate you trying to get some data. I’m anxious to see you get it fixed and get some better pulls in.

Well I can’t upload a picture for some stupid reason, gets to 99% then says data error. Anyways.

looking at my log right now. Dead stop, bring the car up on the converter as much as I can untill it tries pushing through, so about 1600 or so.

Key on ignition off is 92kpa. Anything above that is boost, correct?

afr at this point is 13.0
timing 27*
Let go of brake and mash it, at 4mph and 1648rpm I’m at 93.9 kpa, 21*.

10mph and 2408rpm I’m at 95kpa and 12.70 afr. And it takes off from there. Hopefully any of this helps.

trans is on the bench torn apart, installing the brake and rebuilding it and hopin he car is back on the streets today.

Also so for all of this info keep in mind i have the stock cam and stock 80e converter.

Elevation plays a roll, but In general anything over 100kpa is “boost”. Mine will make about 3lbs before pushing through the drum brakes. Similar timing and AFR. But my 10 PTC converter flashes to about 3200ish if I stomp on it. Sounds like you’ve got a super tight converter. Prob not going to see boost at that RPM level.
