Default LQ4 ring gap too large?

Checking the gap on the lq4 I am throwing together. Top ring shows .035 and second ring shows .033. Pretty consistent with all cylinders. They seem large to me. I am going to be running an LSA with around 12 pounds of boost. I usually see people posting .026-.030

I'm with Doug, send it. A lot better off a little too big than a little too tight.

I don't see you having an issue with oil consumption either

Run it. I looked but can’t find the test that was done. They ran ring gaps up to .100 and saw a negligible loss in power or increase in blowby.

Mine are .033 in my lq4, and has been running over a year. I do not have any issues with oil consumption or smoking ect. I understand the concern, but as said, send it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. My buddy had a new set of Mahle rings and I decided to just chek them out. With my lq4 the second ring has a wider width on it then the top ring. The mahle rings are both the exact same size, no width difference. Does that matter? I am pretty sure I am just going to throw the stock rings back on and send it!

He prob has gen3 rings and you have gen4 pistons, or the other way around. Either way I'm pretty sure they use a different 2nd ring

Yes the gen 4 rings are different, but I am using all gen 3 stuff. The genIII engines used a 1.5/1.5/3.0mm, which are what the replacement rings are. Here is a photo of the difference. Top rings are the same size, where the stock second ring is wider than the replacement ones.

Don't fix what isn't broken!
Better to have a larger gap than not enough

Best quote I’ve ever heard about ring gaps.... if your ring gaps are too big you are the only one that will know, if your ring gaps are too tight everyone will know

I ran an l33 that when I pulled it apart to check gaps, they were .045.... no smoke, no oil consumption, just power 🤣

Yep, in the grand scheme of things....those gaps are still insignificant. It will not cause blowby, it will not cause oil consumption etc. If only people would wake up to it.

If it is an all out race build aiming for that last little bit of power, then you could be concerned about keeping them a bit tighter. In the real world for the vast majority...it's no big deal.

Although it'd be a lot of work, it'd be a nice one for Engine Masters. Start with some nice tight gaps...and then pull it apart and do a few pulls opening up the gaps say 5 to 10 thou at a time and see what happens.

cool idea, I’d like to see crank case pressure measured. My nitrous motor was hemorrhaging oil from every orafice until I put a vacuum pump on it. I suspect this was in part due to the ring gap.
