My buddy had 4th gear disappear on his manual transmission. Instead of getting another one to break at the 600whp range, he wants to do a MVB th400 with a brake. We can get them locally built and done by a reputable guy for $2000.

the biggest question for me and him both, what convertor to buy?

stage 2 turbo cam, stock bottom end 5.3 motor. Comp. 76/75 turbo with .96 AR. Boost was almost instant on the setup but no dyno sheets for the car. 3200lb shell with 3.54 gears. Car is not tuned yet but has gen3 motor so most likely stop around the 600ish mark for power. Car will be used at track afew times a year at most. It’s really a weekend fun car.

so far we need to source flexplate,convertor,shifter and make new DS. Convertor prices are all over the place. I figured $500-700 price range would be a good point?

People have had good luck with the Jegs XHD budget converters.

I went with Jake's budget converter for a 5.3 with a 78/75 and th400. My converter was right in your price range.

Continental Converter has always worked great for me, plus they've been around forever.
Not budget by any means but my last BBC/Nitrous converter was custom spec'd to handle 900whp in a street application and set me back $900 iirc.
Plus I could send it back to have the stall slightly adjusted for free within the first 60 days of purchase.
When they say it stalls to 3,400 rpm, it stalls to 3,400 rpm and locks up like clutch.

the $600 fti has a pretty good rep with the go-fast sloppy foxbody guys

What stall should start with? Cars for sure making full boost right before 4000rpm range right now

PTC $450-$475 converter. Low end of your price range and a great converter.

how much boost you running? you might be surprised how much power that combo will make. 600 is very easy.

don't go down the road of picking your own stall, you'll regret it. call someone like PTC and give them all the specs and let them set up what is right for your car. DO NOT skimp on this, people need to understand that the convertor is the most important piece in getting the most out of your car.

yes the budget ptc converters work great. ran 9.01 at 150 mph with one in my glide at 3500 lbs.

It’s a 93 pump gas car only so whatever it will do on 93. Sadly we don’t have e85 yet.

When you get the 400 done, be sure to have the cooler pressure mod done....BTDT.

I agree on the PTC recommendations. you don't want to just look at price, you want to consider customer support and they have been awesome helping me choose and restall my converter as my build evolved. Tim is exceptionally knowledgeable so having someone to lean on in case of an issue is key.

I spoke with them and think it was around $900 range. Good reviews no matter where you look though.
