Default Do turbos affect engine temps

When I am driving along, my temps are good, around 185, but when I slow down, or idle, they jump up pretty quick, like 10 degs in a matter of seconds. I was wondering in the exhaust does it, lets face it with 8 cyls trying to push thru a small T4 opening would have to create a bottle neck until it got to spinning fast. I figure the intercooler is doing its share of blocking air until the fans kick in. I have my fans staged, first one kicks in at 200, off at 195, second is 205/200. Thought about moving the first one to 195/190, but it might run to much.

have my fans turn on at 180. No need set them so high. My temps don’t jump that quick though. They’ll climb on a hot day but they don’t jump related to boost

My low speed comes on at 185 and it pretty much holds 195 all the time. Occasionally sitting still on a hot day it will creep up till high speed kicks on at 205 and it drops right back to 195

Heat generated at idle is much less than under load. Much less fuel being burned. Increased temp at idle is just a lack of thermal transfer due to lack of air flow. Just turn on/turn up fans.

If you are moving down the road, air is passing through the radiator. So thats normal for it to be at 185. When you stop and the fans arent on, how is air going to be forced through the radiator to keep it cool? its not. Temp will jump up very quickly till fan turn on. This is normal. No offense, but i'd think that would be evident? lower the fan temp that you want the engine to stay at. You cant expect the temps to stay below 200 if you have no air moving across it and fans are off.

I go from 199* moving to 214* in traffic. The end of a 1/4mile pull I'm 220*.

I would move the fan temperatures down! I had a heat issue until I added an oil cooler.

my swap generates a lot of heat and my twin turbos are close to engine wjth exhaust and hotside. Was really considering adding a oil cooler.

A non-turbo setup (NA/blower/etc.) only has the header primaries in the engine bay. A turbo setup not only has a large heat sink in the engine bay, but the entire hot side. It's like running an entire exhaust system with a muffler under the hood. All that piping is trying to get the heat released as convection into the air which is mostly trapped in the engine bay. That's why turbo blankets, high temp wrap/coatings, and fans are so important.

sounds like you're running a 180° stat, try a 160, see what temp it can hold while cruising around and set the fan temps a bit higher. I found I could cruise around in the mid 170s, so I set fan on at 185 off 178. Works great, was about your #s with a 180 stat. Also put in manual control of high speed fan for staging lane waits and burnouts, keeps starting line temps down. Only thing that makes it hotter is a good tail wind in traffic - seems to fight the fan , still won't go over 195 or just hit the high speed

I'm considering just wiring my fans to a toggle switch in the car and just turning them on once it's fired up. The fans would probably live a lot longer too.

Anyone else do it this way?

Lots of people do. Just make sure you remember to turn them on.

You've already answered your own question.

You need airflow.
