Safe Max HP for a Turbo LQ9 On 93
Hi folks. For those running a SBE 6.0, what would be a safe HP level with 93-octane? Setting up a DD for a buddy with a SBE LQ9 with the Summit stage II turbo cam. Not looking to rotate the earth, just the occassional trip to the track but not tear it up.....tks.
I'd say 10ish psi maybe a smidge more depending on how much you've opened up the rings. I'd keep an eye on the plugs
I ran my last car which was an SBE LS1 up to 14lbs. and 700whp on pump 91 through a T56 for years and was not nice to it.
Timing was around 11-12 degrees with 317 heads, short block had just under 100K on it, never touched the rings.

Mines unopened 180k lq4 , never on a dyno but wallace racing calculators puts it about 785 flywheel . Could probably do more but tiny cam and cast 7875 are pretty much done at this point. Daily it on 91 but try to get as much 94 in it as possible for track days , so 92-93 approx. I do spray WM which I think is critical to its life . Lq9 is what 10:1 vs the lq4s 9.4 :1 so I would add some caution there
yeah it did but that was on E44% @ 19 or so pounds going off memory.
630 @14psi pg but not sure if it was 91 or 93 and 450 @ 6 psi
Getting interested myself in running pump since now crossing south for e85 will be out of the question come December and race e85 or C16 they can take that and shove it with their prices.

Truth be known, you could pretty much take a basic SBE build, hand it to several tuners, diff dynos, 93 octane, prob end up with a range from 9 PSI up to 16, 17 reported, lol. I know Matt tends to pull more boost than some other tuners. IC'ed, non IC'ed, car weight, etc, all come into play. I usually target about 10, as I am not a precise tuner, but feel enough to be safe, lol. When I ran a Procharger with a blowthru carb and IC'er, I reg ran 18 lbs, on 93. Intake temps were around 190 degs.
Most of the junkyard build types Ive met were of the mindset to push the first one purposely till it pops. Replace with junkyard engine #2, and back off the settings a c-hair.
The new settings were deemed safe, and other folks took that as gospel to set up identically.
They made for some quite entertaining displays of destruction when one would inevitably melt a pathway from block, head, or both to the outside.

700hp on 93 was as far as I pushed before things started breaking when i got greedy with boost. Once i built up the bottom end on 93 and meth kit i could turno up the boost and lowering timing and hit over 800hp safely.
We have ****-Tier "90" Octane pump gasoline here, nothing better within a thousand miles.
I push 190kPa (12 PSI) into an early HIGH-Miles 5.3 liter, been beating on it hard for over a year, doesnt even get the oil dirty.
My gasoline is really shitty--= Spark timing map drops to 9degrees around 4000 rpm, back up to 13 degrees from 4800- 6400
10 GPM 50%methanol/water progressive injection helps keep alive.
engine has around 180,000 miles, oil consumption is ZERO.

Slippery slope. Running 14lbs or so on pump isn’t hard and is around the cap of my comfort zone on 91 with a little water/meth. But a healthy “cam only” 6.0 on 14-15lbs will tax the drive line a ton. Factory high mile driveline won’t last long if you lean on it in my experiance. Id stay at 6-8lbs if he wanted any longevity out of it on a factory driveline. Run something fun like an S366 that lights off really fast. Think kurt urban has a neat shop truck build where he did somethign similar. Want to say I read he got 107k out of that turbo kit/combo he daily drove. Was a 6.0 shop truck on pump gas.

If I could get it up around 500-550chp at 7-8 lbs. with instant spool would make for a great daily driver truck.
