Unhappy Think the car was hurt today....

Well today was the first day back to work after a long time. I was heading up to fill out some paperwork and I took the bird for a ride since it was nice out but hotter than hell. I figured a short highway trip(10 minutes) at most wouldn't be all that bad. Well once I got off the freeway I noticed a ticking sound, and thought **** what now So I slow down and the ticking slows down with as the revs drop I speed up and the same frickin thing happens, so I pull into the parking lot of the new place I work at, don't have time to pop the hood, cuz the boss lady is waiting for me. I get my business done.....really fast, poor lady thought I was pissed at her because I was just thinking at what could be wrong with the car AGAIN so I turn in my paperwork and go out to the lot. I check under the car for coolant dripping down, nothing...whew? I hop in the car start her up and damn if the ticking doesn't start up again So I jump out of the car with it running and start to check things over, don't see anything, but some construction guys start walking up and start asking whats wrong with the car. They start giving me advice to what might be wrong with it and thats only pissing me off more cuz they have absolutely no clue as to whats going on, so I tell them I'll take their advice and check it at the house, cruise home nice and slow... outside temp is around 96 degs. Car felt "good" didn't get on it going to work other than accelerating onto the freeway, and took it easy on the way home. It ticked all the way home I popped the hood again looked for coolant, or any other things that might be wrong(header gasket, loose header flanges, s/c belt, accessory belt, spark plugs and wires, crank bolt, (still tight as hell ) Check the coolant once it was cool, not low or milky.... but the ticking is still coming from the top or front of the engine(only have one good ear, can't pinpoint noise anymore...q-tip accident)
I gave up and went inside, I knew I should'nt have driven the car cause it was very lean at idle and part throttle and was getting some nasty KR when trying to take off from lights or stop signs. I logged the other day with efilive and saw KR and the WB was at 16.1-19.1-1. I'll check more things tomorrow, I'm done with it today.

How loud is this ticking, is it coming from under the valvecovers, could be a bad rocker arm, if it were a valvespring you would know for sure......maybe a lifter, but I doubt it, maybe a bent pushrod?

Pretty damn loud, I'm going to pull the covers off tomorrow to see what I find, I put a screwdriver to the VC's and to the base of my good ear and all sounded well in there, nice and smooth. I don't know what it is at all, sounds like a tap, tap, tick, tap, tick and goes up and down with the revs
If its hurt, everything will be up for sale, I'm tired of this stuff. I just wanted 10's.
I'll keep you guys posted on what I find tomorrow. Any way you can see into the cylinders, other than pulling the heads? Might have sucked something up or cracked something....but don't really want to think that way

That would be cool, maybe 3 good ears can find where the noise is coming from lol, and a cool head too, I should be here all day. I won't be needed at work until next wednesday of next week.
Thanks Frank

I just got done looking at your logs, and sent you a PM. It defiantly looks like there was an issue with lean operation at part-throttle, lots of KR for a tell-tale.

I also just got done looking at the first FMIC log you sent and it looks normal. When did the car start doing this??

I remember the last time I heard a loud ticking ( almost a knock ) . . . cracked ringland on #1. I sure hope that's not what you're hearing!

So far I had the VC's off and everything was fine under there, no spit out roller bearings, all the retainers and locks were there, and the springs were all fine, no cracks or broken springs. I gotta love the coil relocation kit, made this a snap.

Kevin, sent you a PM back, probably be better if we went through email, going over my inital FMIC log, which was all highway driving, it looks to be a little on the lean side too. The LM-1 Log said I was at 16.1-1 most of the time on the highway. I also noted that the car was now lean after the FMIC install in my first run down post after installing it(FMIC) I'll find the link to the post...we'll get it figured out, thank you for always helping me

Found the source of the ticking noise it was a corner of the heat shielding that I have wrapped around the TB/MAF pipe. A corner of that ceramic/aluminized pad was hitting the water pump pulley bolts(the bolts that hold the WP pulley on....98 year isn't a pressed on pulley like 99+)

So that was the ticking. Tied it up a lot better and the shielding sits far away from the waterpump pulley bolts now........WHEEEEW!!!!!!!!!!
Man something so simple, what a difference a day makes and a fresh set of eyes. Merlin and me found the reason why my car is so lean too. NoGo I'll be pm'ing you and emailing you now.

Thanks guys.
Noyzee, if it was hurt. N2O was really gonna go back on, with some high compression pistons and a 200 shot, "**** it, spray it" was going to be my new motto Still might get another dry kit for it, had to sell the old TNT kit that was on it to pay some bills

Blackbird, nope this new file I have in her now is too lean in the idle/PT areas, so I put in one of my first files from NoGo that was really rich and it straightened her out a/f wise at idle and PT.....except for WOT it is waaay rich again. Reason we went with a leaner file to begin with. Just needs to be fine tuned. NoGo is doing an awesome job and can't say enough about him and his tunes. They are awesome. The things he can do from the east coast to get my car running like it is now is amazing. This altitude messes things up, gotta compensate for less air, less HP/TQ, fuel demand, MAF and throw a S/C into that mix and it gets pretty hairy. NoGo is the man, I am sure by the end of the day, the car will have a kick *** tune in it. I have been to 2 other tuners before Kevin and they couldn't get the car to run or idle. Kevin almost has me in the 10's up here
