Default Turbo is on...

After 12 hours at the exhaust shop of making a new exhaust system (3in mandrel bends into a single 4in mandrel bent system that dumps into a T70 similar to an STS setup. First impression I would say it's pretty crazy, I've only give it 1/4 throttle and after hearing the big swoosh of air it lurches forward and goes. Anyway I'll have pics up soon.

Please get us some details on how you are oiling the turbo, I'm preparing with the exhaust shop to do my install in the next two weeks hopefully! I still don't have the lubrication side down yet.

What engine work did you do to prep for your turbo?

As far as the oiling system I have a Mocal Electric Oil pump that sends the oil back to the pan. I had an aluminum block welded on and tapped to the oil pan for the return line when I had the engine out. The pressure side comes from the little nipple above the oil filter. I removed that and had that drilled and tapped for a brass fitting. I ran two 3/8's lines to the back, for pressure and return for the turbo. The pump was $180, I don't remember where I got it but I can find out when I get home. I mounted it right below the electrical connectors for the fuel pump etc and spliced in to the power wire for the fuel pump to power the oil pump when the car turns on.

As far as engine work, all of the components are brand new. New GM 6.0L block, had the block cut for o-rings. Stock crank, Eagle H-Beam Rods, and Wiseco -25cc 2618 forged pistons. I'm running PP Stage 3 LS6 heads with (2.08/2.02) valves, every bolt on besides an electric water pump. The cam is a custom ground lunati cam specs are 231/224 (ordered 230/225) .598/.576 on a 116lsa +3

My only complaint so far is that the exhaust shop has the turbo sitting a little lower than I would like so I will have to go back so they can raise it up closer to the floorpan.

congrats!!

Question for you...

Where is the turbo mounted? Do you think you'll run into velocity/spooling problems with a huge 4 inch pipe and 3inch Ypipe??

It's kind of a test and trial, considering I have a 4000 stall converter from my original setup I'm not too too worried about it

With that stall you should be ok. With a 6spd a rear mounted T70 should spool (peak torque) around 4300-4500 rpms. With the auto though it will spool a little quicker since it will load the motor much better. Good luck...

Jose,

What would the max power potential be of such a setup?

thanks

On a rear mount, common turbo reasoning doesn't apply. If you can spray enough meth. and keep the IAT's down, the turbo should max out around 840hp crank theoretically if we ignore variables. Of course we are missing a few key elements. With the turbo being rear mounted you are effectively changing the output. Turbos are rated and tested (SAE J1826) with 1100 deg exhaust gas incoming on the turbine. Since with a rear mount setup its much cooler you will lose some of the turbos efficiency as well. The turbo will make less power. Also since heat is lost, you have to counter with using a smaller exhaust housing, which then adds limit to the hp made and also back pressure at higher hp levels. Also the compressor maps shift so you have to be careful when picking a turbo for your setup. For most street setups you can get away with it, its not the ideal setup, but it does work.

One thing I did forget to mention is Sly has a MP T70 which spools quicker then the other normal friction bearing T70's.

I'm also running a .96 AR housing on it, which may be a little big but I'm testing things out to see how they do since the setup is a little different than the STS. I haven't tuned it or gotten on it yet but I'm gonna guess that for my setup a .81 would probably be optimal.

The .81 will probably be your best bet. Also the turbo you have is probably the best big unit you could use for a rear mount setup other then a BB unit. But for less then half the cost you can't beat the Master Power units. I have alot of big hp honda customers that are really starting to catch on to these MP-T70 units since they spool really well.

My thoughts exactly. Now that I got it on I need to figure out the tuning and get the fuel system done. Any tips on tuning the thing?

I am really looking forward to seeing your numbers

How much do you think you have into the turbo system itself total cost? (Not the exhaust piping but the actual turbo, oil setup and return tubing for the air intake)

Well I haven't bought the Meth Injection kit yet but the cost of everything with the gauges and gauge pod, T70, Tial BOV and WG, all new exhaust mandrel bent from the headers back (custom made at local exhaust shop) and all of the other little odds and ends it's between $1500-$1800 then add the Meth kit on top of that and your looking at around $2000-$2200

Oh my bad, minus the exhaust work, I have about $1200-$1400 into everything.
