Default Need recommendation for Titanium?

Who has the best prices on titanium? I'm looking for solid round stock and tubing (1/4" to 2" dia.) lengths of 6ft+. What I'm mainly looking for is titanium pipe 4",5" and 6" dia. lengths of 10' to 20'. I know this material is not cheap but at the prices I have been paying from current source I just feel I can find it cheaper.

Prefer to purchase in Michigan if possible so I can pickup. Any of ya that have built headers or plumb your turbo car your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,
Jim

Call President Titanium in Mass. I know its not in Mich but the material is light and should not cost much to ship. Its says on their site that they have seamless pipes. The 6al4v alloy is pretty machineable and I think would bend well too. You may have to ask around if you are going to bend the stuff. It will not bend the same as seel or stainless steels. http://www.presidenttitanium.com/

http://www.titaniumjoe.com/

or trident in houston....magnesium, titanium...anything you need.

for exhaust system stuff you probably want the 6al4v, otherwise, CP works just fine.

Quick question. How expensive is Titanium. It has been protrayed as this Space Age metal. I just don't know how it's price compairs to other metal. I know you can't just pickit up at Home Depot.

A 6' section of 1/4" titanium rod costs 50 bucks for the low grade and 100 bucks for a higher grade. At that Titanium Joe place, if you wanted to build a 5" down pipe for a turbo drag car it would be $5.17 per inch for the tubing alone! Not to mention that getting a 5" titanium bend is going to be astronomical.

I dont think titanium is worth any performace gain (if there is any). It sure would sound impressive though.

It's not about the performance, it's the weight. You can easily drop 100 to 200 pounds just by going after simple things with titanium on the big Outlaw 10.5 and Pro Mod cars. It's at a huge price, but if it's the difference between a 3000 pound car or a 2800 pound car, you'll do everything you can to get the weight out.

it really isnt all that expensive. at least not as much as all the hype would lead you to believe. now, finding someone who can weld it (like me) is another story.

Well I dont think he has an Outlaw or Pro Mod car. If he does then hell, go for it. If it's weight he's worried about, I'd think it can be removed somewhere else. I know titanium is extrememly light, but damn it's expensive

Jim is building a Pro Mod, that's why he's asking if any of us have any leads on cheaper materials. Even the guys that build those cars try to save money where they can. It will help them pay the bills to make more power without cutting any corners. And everything in his car has been removed. It's a full tube 25.2 (could even pass 25.1E with little work). It's very cool looking, should be very very nice when it's done. He's looking for this stuff to finish off some of the smaller pieces that need to get done yet (windows, door accessories, etc). Everything else is either CF, Fiberglass, etc. Pretty incredible to say the least. I can't wait to see the engine finally in the car!!

actually, 5" OD by .049 wall thickness is $46 per foot.

just to compare, 5" OD, .065 304 stainless is $34 per foot.

and there are ways around that. i buy .049 flat sheet, roll it, then weld a seam. makes almost perfectly round pipe, for about half the price per foot of standard tubing.

How do you do large tubing bends. Say 5" pipe on a 5 or 6" radius?

a 5" radius on a 5" inch pipe is physically impossible. i think the rule of thumb is somethign like the radius of the bend cant be less than double the radius of the tube.....i dunno....im not an engineeer, but i dont think you could (or would need to) bend it that tight.

but if you wanted to get close you would have to cut and section

arent too many mandrel benders in the states that im aware of that can handle 5" stuff.

This is all good! Thanks gents for your reply. I will give them a call and see what pricing is like.

My car actually isn't even close to ProMod material(Thanks Steve)kinda looks like it in the making. Actually the class the car should fit in to run would either be Pro Street or Outlaw. Depends on what rules are in effect? My car will take the hit for modified body and the Lenco/Bruno rule, thus placing me in Outlaw or ProStreet. I'm only looking to have fun at locale small events and little weekend street use with friends whom also have cars like mine.

Saving money and weight anywhere is what I'm all about! As for welding titanium it's not hard nor is there any special enclosed booth required or what ever is said. Any experienced welder that is good with Tig welding will be fine. There are a few items required to weld titanium but all in all peace of cake.

Bent 5"dia or even 6"dia tubing actually is available but where talking very minor bends. A good friend of mine owns a chassis shop and when a job comes in for exhaust of this size we purchase semi truck exhaust parts. Much cheaper than calling a specialty exhaust shop and all of the bends needed are usually in stock. In Grand Rapids, MI Dermody Truck has everything to run 6" exhaust.

Thanks again for titanium info.
