Default Turbo sputter

Just a Q for a friend.

If he has added a new wastegate and increased boost level 2-3psi, but is now hearing a sputtering noise at higher RPM's... what might it be?

Kind of a fluttering sound.

is it only when he lets off the pedal? maybe compressor surge? just a shot in the dark

Thx, can someone define compressor surge?

Read up on it a little.
Looks like he has a factory blow off valve.
Maybe it is opening too soon and he needs to replace it.

If it happens when you let off the accelerator under boost, it is the sound made by the air passing back through the turbo. A good BOV will get rid of this. It is not the best thing for the turbo's to stall the compressors with the backflow of air. A good hard high boost slam can take out your turbo too (don't ask me how I know).

I have the exact same problem! I have tried different vacuum sources, different BOV tensions (mine's adjustable) and even tried out a $300 bov instead of my $100 one and it still does it? It never does it under low boost or half throttle. Only happens at 3/4 to full throttle and even then it is about 50% of the time. I'm out of ideas. Sorry to jack the thread but any answer I get will probably help. Could it be I need two BOV since one isn't dumping enough air? Anybody?

If your on the throttle and its making noises then its not the BOV. Sounds like compressor surge. What engine is this on and what turbo is it?? We can get further into it, but we need more details.

For mine, I have twin Garrett t3/t4e's, .69 exhaust, running 6-7psi on a 2002 TA LS1 M6, and it's only when OFF the throttle. If I get into boost at 1/2 throttle or less, no problems, the bOV fires perfectly. When I'm doing a heavy pull, 3/4 throttle or more, it's totally fine and pulls like a freight train but when I shift, 50% of the time it surges back. Like I said, I've tried everything I can think off and nothing seems to help.

What BOV are you running, and where did you place it?? Location is very important.

I can't remember the make of mine but I did try a 1.5" TurboSmart Supersonic and behaved the exact same way. Here's a pic of my setup, hope it helps.

You should have the BOV placed pre-intercooler and very close to the compressor outlet.

We tested BOV's in 2 different locations. Made a difference in performance and sound as well.

i always thought you did the BOV after the FMIC because of the drop from the intercooler.do you always put it b4 or just on a twin turbo setup Jose?

Twin or single won't matter since 6psi, is 6psi whether it comes form one or two turbos. But like I said, if it isn't a huge venture for me to relocate it, I'll try it and let you know if it helps.
