Default Turbo Nightmare!!!

A while back I purchased a T76 from a guy named "ricky" on TurboMustangs.com. Ricky picked up the turbo from 8urls1 (Dean). Ricky says that he never put it on his car and the turbo was in good working condition. The turbo came with a tang housing so I had to switch it over to an on-center. When the old housing came off, we realized that the wheel was damaged pretty bad. I talked to both guys but it appears that I am going to be footing the bill for the repairs. Dean, who drives a 800rwhp Mustang, said that he had a problem with some spark plugs and lost the tips (which most likely ended up in the turbo), but he thought it was perfectly ok. He said that he never took the turbo apart but he was still running 9.72 after his spark plug drama. Ricky still claims that he had no idea and so does Aaron, the guy that put me in contact with Ricky.

In the end, I will be paying more for this turbo than I would if I would have purchased a brand new turbo. Let this be a lesson to anyone buying a turbo.... guess I learned the hard way. Here are some pictures:

that turbo looks awful, sorry.

you are looking at at least $500 to repair.

I just recently spent $900 to sell my $3000 80mm for $1600 to replace the exhaust wheel, but it was a ball bearing turbo

I am hoping that the ball bearings don't have to be replaced because that alone is $400. I am told that it could cost up to $1250 for the repairs. It sucks that the two people responsible for this refuse to help me out at all.... but I guess that's the way it goes.

it is sad that is usually the case where the buyer gets screwed while the owner counts there wrongly earned cash

This applies to purchasing anything used - there is always a risk. Sorry to hear about your situation.

I have found that when buying used you soemtimes come out way ahead ( the whole point) and sometimes you lose your ***. A turbo is one of those things you really have to watch.

Those guys are jerks for not offering to help, that's old damage. I bet the 2nd guy realized it was messed up and just passed it off.

I would like to believe that ricky didn't know anything about it. Hopefully your turbo is in good condition but you might want to take it apart just to make sure. I noticed that ricky is selling off alot of things at this point. He told me that he fears losing his job. I figured that maybe he would offer me something (maybe some of the parts) just to make things right.... but I guess you really can't expect that from anyone. I hope everything works out ok for you. I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this.

Where is a link to a Ricky FS thread? How long ago did you buy it?

There wasn't a thread and the turbo was purchased a while back... probably 7 months or so. Aaron (which is a mod on that site) contacted me directly because he knew I was in need of a turbo. Aaron told me that he had a friend with a T76 who was considering selling it. Aaron said that he would contact ricky and see if he still had it and would have him contact me. I worked out the price through Aaron and was going to pick it up at his house until Ricky contacted me. Apparently Dean had to ship the turbo to Ricky and then he was going to come into town and meet up with me. I never thought about taking the turbo apart while we were standing in the parking lot. I figured if nothing else that I could trust Aaron...

and I believe this is the turbo that Rice Etr purchased
