Default Question on STS exhaust note

Hey guys,

I have a question for anyone with an STS turbo kit on their LS1 4th gen F-bodies. I've read back a few pages in this forum and can't seem to find anything, so here goes: How loud is your car with the remote mount turbo? On STS' site it says that some people have equated it to sounding like a performance muffler, but in the article that PHR did, it says that it idled quieter than stock ('02 SS). I'm just curious as to how loud the system is, and if it can be made louder without killing performance?

Thanks,

They sound a lot like stock until the turbo spools. When the wastegate opens, the turbine noise is awesome.

Gutt the cats, add a cam and a larger turbo with a larger A/R and it gets pretty loud

Thanks for the responses, it's much appreciated. The car will have to pass NY State emissions, so I don't think I'd be able to gut or remove the cats? I would probably upgrade the turbo and run 7-8psi, but I'm not sure how big I could go on the cam, if at all because of emissions testing. I'd only be looking at making 450rwhp or so, as the car would be driven regularly, and probably see some rain. I don't have a 4th gen currently, and probably won't for another 6 months or so, depending if and when I sell my truck, as I need it for the winter. I was just curious as to how loud STS turbo'd cars are as I'd want the car to be noticeable at idle, and pretty loud at WOT.

Thanks again,

I used to a flowmaster muffler on the car before I put on the sts kit. Outside I would say that the car is now a little bit louder, it sounds awesome. The interior resonance is also less, until you put your foot into then it sounds like all hell has broken lose inside the car. I love it!

Canadian t/a, thanks for the info, this is good news .

highspeed, I don't think anyone would know on the outside, but the emissions tester would probably know when he put my car on the rollers, and used the sniffer thing.

One more question for you guys,

Would dumping the exhaust right after the turbo make it any louder? Would this cause any problems? I don't like the look of only 1 pipe so if one were to cut this pipe back a foot or so, making it so that the exhaust was about even with the filter, would this cause any problems with backpressure or anything?

Here's a pic for reference:

It depends on how large of an exhaust housing is on the turbo. A GT76 with a 96 exhaust housing is really loud. The standard 60-1 turbo is pretty quiet. My car sounds pretty much the same as it did with the Magnaflow cat back it had on it before and I'm running the base 5 psi kit. The turbo sound is a lot of fun on the street, everybody freaks about how cool it sounds.

Brady,

Thanks for the response. Sounds like an upgraded turbo may be the way to go.
