Default 347, 383, or 402 thoughts please. . .

Guys, I have already blown my stock 347, now it's time to get a forged mo-mo. I am leaning toward the SLP 402; however, before making the purchase, I figured it would be good to get more feedback.

I already have the 224/224 cam and a built tranny. I am going to keep the P1 ATI blower for now. I figure a forged 402 with an ATI (even if it only makes 5 psi) will be pretty trick.

I would love to get some good feedback before making the purchase.

i read a post of one guy with a slp 402 that is having some problems blowing smoke out the exhaust, He has some kind of blowby/ring seating failure.

A forged 347 will do just fine, with FI there really isn't a necessity to go up in cubes.

Your car made a lot of power for its mods and boost level.

I wouldn't suggest any of those options. HPE can set you up with a 408 iron block with basically any piston you want for $3899 or do a 346 for $2499. Right now HPE is building me an iron 398 with forged everything for a little over 4k. This motor is being built to withstand 1500 hp!!! The pistons and wrist pins used in my motor are similar to those used in Rick's 8 second 170mph TA on HPE's site. Here's a link to their F-body stuff:

https://www.horsepowerengineering.co...cPath=21_22_27

Erik Koenig(the machine shop manager) will talk to you and design everything to your needs. He will even explain anything that you don't understand, I've spent countless hours on the phone with him and that's part of what made me go with HPE. Also if you go with HPE i suggest asking about Probe rods as they are lighter than the Eagle's and are much easier to balance for only a few bucks more. Good luck.

edit: What heads are u running. If they are stock u might want to look into a set of ported once while the motor is out of the car.

Their warranty won't apply to a car running boost. . .but they say it will take 1200hp?

yep, we were pushing the stock bottom end until it blew. I do still have stock LS1 heads, so I will be swapping heads pretty soon also. For now, however, my main goal is to get the car back on the road. I am slightly limited with funds because I have to pay for a wedding/reception in May. . .I also want to have the car custom re-painted. . .

Thunder racing has a 346 for 3k and a 383 for 3,900 and i am sure that the 408 is up there also. I would think that the 370 would be in the low 3k rang.

ha ha ha Your SLP 402 doesnt even have a warrenty at all......... do a lil searching....... You dont need big cubes to make alot of HP. Im running a 370 iron block from AP Engineering... and the only reason i went iron was because when i blew my stock motor it destroyed the block and head. I dont know if HPE's short block includes all ARP fasteners or not but i know APE's does.
My short block was $4600 and that included,
a new 6.0L block,
Polished & Magnafluxed Stock Crank
Diamond Forged Ceramic Coated -15cc Dish 4.03" Pistons (Coating extra)
Diamond 4130 Chromemoly Wrist Pins
Diamond Pro Select Ring Set/ File Fit
Eagle H-Beam Connecting Rods 6.125"
L19 ARP Rod Bolts
Federal Mogul 152M Main Bearings
Clevite CB663H Connecting Rod Bearings
ARP Main Studs
ARP Head Studs
Cloyes Adjustable Timing Chain Set
JWISS Ketton C5R Timing Chain
Ported LS6 Oil Pump
Blueprinted & Fully Balanced
Camshaft
There cheap street 347 is $2899 i believe off the top of my head......
Oh and most every engine builder needes your block, crank, oil pan and front and rear cover or a Core charge is applied.

The SLP short block does not require a core. I may have to purchase ARP studs also? I understand smaller cubes can generate great results, but couldn't the same be said for a 305? It seems like adding cubes also generates somewhat of a "cool factor". At any rate, the following parts are included in the short block:

ZL-402 (low compression) SHORT BLOCK INCLUDES:
-Built entirely from brand-new parts.
-Sold outright—no cores required!
-GM LQ9 iron 6.0-liter block (includes block plugs)
-4.000" Eagle 4340 forged steel crankshaft, balanced to rotating assembly
-4.000" Ross heavy-duty, low-compression, 2618 forged alloy pistons with -28.50cc dish (includes new rings and full-float pins)
-402-CID displacement
-Eagle 6.125" H-beam rods
-Includes new, factory-installed cam, rod, and main bearings.
-9:1 compression ratio (nominal; ultimate compression ratio will depend upon heads and gaskets used)
-Designed for forced-induction applications
-Capable of supporting up to 700hp
-Meticulously assembled to OEM tolerances and specifications.

No. 1500 hp. You're worried about a warranty? I don't think you should go with an "off the shelf" motor because there are much better components to suite your needs than what SLP decided to pick out. HPE is probably the least expensive builder that knows what they're doing and are nationally accredited. I would stick with what i know works. HPE has built countles LT1's + LS1's that are in the 9's and lower. I think they know what they're doing and wouldn't even think twice about the quality of their work.

Before you plunk 4k on something as important as a motor at least call around and talk to a bunch of shops to see which ones will talk to you and which ones won't give you the time of day.

Good luck.

Greg

The HPE motor comes with ARP bolts. Head studs can be added for $225. The HPE motor doesn't come with an oil pump, timing chain, or cam but it does come with a forged crank.

BTW - I am not looking for anywhere near 1200 HP. The comments regarding warranty were merely toungue-in-cheek.

SLP, also a vendor on this forum, does not select all the parts. As far as I know, before ordering the SLP shortblock from Speed Inc, they mandate a phone conversation to make sure all the necessary parts are being ordered?

Also, the guy who had the SLP 402, found the problem and the motor appears to be running strong.

I don't know the specifics. Apparently, the individual who put the motor together discovered something leaking and fixed the problem? One of the back seals or something?

Its odd dont you think, how people come to the conclusions that they do.
My 427 help me to net the 800+ RWHP. I feel that would not have been possible and still have gotten the reliablity that I got from my setup.

Really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. The higher you go up in cubes, the more low end torque you will develop quicker. I went with a 427, but my friend did a 383 with an F1-R and is making 700RWHP. Both are running on Pump Gas. The 383 is probably the best bank for the buck.
