Exclamation Who else is overheating?

I never overheated once until I put on this p-1sc and now everytime I drive it heats up, goes away, heats up goes away. I mean hot like check guages hot. I checked rad. level, use purple ice, new ati fan is working, have my air dam on, 160' therm. and am running the fmic. What's the deal?

From what I've read, alot of people have had problems with wiring the fan backwards and having the fan push instead of pull. Other that that, perhaps the fmic is restricting airflow to the rad.

How could I fix? How could I tell if I had a bad rad. or water pump or something? Although I never had a problem before now!

look at the obvious first, is there a plastic bag or something blocking your radiator? sounds stupid but one day i noticed my car was running a little warmer and when i looked under there there was 2 plastic bags sprawled out completely over my radiator.

Does it heat up and cool down while you are driving at a steady speed? That sounds like a stuck thermostat if it does that. If you cruise at 60 mph or so and it heats up and cools down, definitely replace the thermostat.

Yes, it will go up to maxed out then come back down slowly (I turn on the heater), I bought a hypertech a couple years ago. If I replace just that I won't have to get it retuned will I? What if it's a different brand but still a 160? I guess I could try it!

If it was tuned for 160 before, there will be no need for a retune.

Ok, I put the thermostat in boiling water and it did open up. That means it's still good right? Not stuck! Now what?

Heres a possible problem.. The ATI blowers come with the surge valve roted back to the intake side of the blower. Basicly when the motor is idleing the hot air that passes through the blower gets re-routed again through the blower. This causes the blower intake temps to get VERY hot and causes the motor itself to get hot.. If you ATap the car, I'll bet your intake temps are very high. To solve this problem, just vent the surge/bov to he open air and plug the hole that the tube used to run into.. Orget rid of it and just do a new BOV that vents when the engine is under vac..

No, I'm pretty sure it's hooked up right because the shop installed it for me!

Id check the fan...... is it hot under your hood when you pop the hood?? IE does it feel really hot right in front of the radiator???? We wired my car the way the manual said and the fan was wired backwards. I would get really hot at idle and normal cruising in traffic.... the first time out..... i got on the free way because my temps were around 225-235 and as soon as i was up to 70 my temps would drop to almost normal..... and i was tuned for a 160 stat also...... Check the fan man... even though the manual may say its right thats what it could be..... sometimes its the little things.

Just because a shop did it doesnt mean they did it right..... people make mistakes and if they havent done very many ATI install they could of followed the manuel and did it wrong.

My overheating problem was the wiring of the fan. It takes maybe 10 minutes to switch the wires. Na$ty-TA is right. The manual is wrong and if the shop put it in according to the manual, then it is wrong.

I think this is why people are going to Spal fans and think the ATI fan is crap. The fan is actually good if wired properly.

Good luck.

Could someone tell me the right way to wire it? Also see if you can load FMS CAm Page. Broke a bolt on my thermostat, got it off, but the tiny piece that is left is stuck in the water pump, any sugg?

Someone should contact ATI about this. It will take out a lot of headaches for the DIY'er.

Everyone is missing the obvious. Why don't you just look at the fans? Let the idle and wait for the fans to come on. You should be able to visually tell which direction is the right direction. You should also feel the air being blown towards the engine. If not, adjust your wiring.

Also what Clint was mentioning was not to say that it was hooked up incorrectly. He was suggestion you hook it up in a different manor than suggested in the manual. I'm sure ATI designed it like that to meet some sort of state regulation or noise ordinance. But I have my Surve valve venting to the atmosphere and have since day one. I never hooked that rerouting tubing up to the system. It doesn't make any since to do so. Even if the recirculated air is not your problem, it will help your IATs and give you that oh so cool BOV sound.

Mike

p.s. By the way, if you do deside to vent to the atmoshpere, Pep boys sells freeze expansion plugs that work well in filling that hole up.
