Exclamation WTF STS ?! Look at this...

Hey guys I think I've almost had it with this STS kit. Quality is definitely not there... My first big problem was trying to hook up the turbo assembly at the I pipe. The car came with a slowmaster exhaust 3" all the way back. The turbo inlet pipe is smaller than that, also the slowmaster I pipe is bent wrong too - so I need to pick up a stock I pipe. Not STS's fault... but they should've mentioned if your exhaust isn't stock prepare for battle

Okay I got over that... and having to modify other pieces to make them work correctly... but NOW could someone please answer me this... how the hell am I suppose get enough clearance between the charge pipe and the PS pump and serpentine belt? Or do I just start the engine and let the belt clearance the lines ? Seriously, It seems like wherever I try to move the pipe, and the lines, I get zero clearance, or actually stuff getting pinched between the belt. So what's going on? STS doesn't mention anything about this in their manual (or a lot of other junk it would've been nice to have a heads up on). Now I know why STS doesn't show any good pictures of this area. Well, all the best STS guys are on this board, so no sense calling anyone again. Any insight would be helpful before I go crazy . Oh, and don't say cut and re route the PS cooler lines. I shouldn't have to do that. Check out the pictures

Default I would send them the pics and ask

I have no idea why your having issues as I never used my kit in the stock form. Went straight to using a FMIC.

I would have to think somebody has installed an STS on a SS or WS6 with the PS cooler.

There customer service is awesome. Just email them the pics and ask whats up.

Also some of the STS resellers here will probably be able to chime in.

Yeah, I called about the I Pipe issue, and they seemed to have the same idea had... get a stock I pipe. If the bend was right I would just expand the turbo inlet and be done with it, but now this mess. I might have to re route those damn PS lines...

Yeah I know ... I talked to Slowhawk, and he said I need to push the lines between the pipe and PS pulley and there should be enough room... but I'm sorry there just isn't any room. It's like the square peg in the round hole thing...

Call me at 817-703-3750 and I can help you out.
The solution is simple, but it would be easier to explain it to you over the phone.

You just need to play with it. Rather then running those lines in between the charge pipe and pulleys run them around the charge pipe. The bracket coming out from the fan shroud can be removed by pinching the clip portion. Your charge pipe coming up looks like it's coming up a little high too. Here's some pics to help out.

See it fits:

Here is the bracket holding the coolant pipe out towards the motor, this can be removed:

Thanks Billy + Brady... I'll try exactly what you guys said. It looks like the coolant hose is to blame. Not to mention putting the MAF down there in the first place

I'll keep you guys updated!

Well... the coolant hose got circumcised, and the hose clip got removed, and that seemed to make a big difference. I think I got more clearance than Brady has in that pic. . I'll take some pics later...

BTW Jammer, how are the twins?

I just need to finish the wiring and a few other things while I wait for a stock I pipe. I couldn't weld it if I wanted to. The place where the inlet pipe needs to go goes PAST the bend. Stupid flowmaster

Man.. this thing better make some serious power for giving me so much grief.

when I got my sts kit I had the flowmaster cat back so I orderd mine made to fit the bigger pipe and it worked perfect.but what you could do is just shorten the exaust pipe and weld a reducer to make it fit.Idont have the powersteering cooler so I didnt have your other problem.good luck

Rofl... Just havin a lil fun. I have spent a total of 8-12 hours on my car these last 2 months.... I bought another ride for road race and have been playing with that.
The oiling system is installed and just need to make the last wiring connection on that to finalize it. Whats left for me is plugs, fluids, and some optional things I want to do first, like relocating the fuel line path and the brake line path. Still need a few bolts for this and that... I am hitting the dyno for a run on April 26, so I should have some low-boost prelim numbers on the twins then. I still need to figure out the boost line config.

Keep on truckin, you'll get er done.

Since it's stock I don't see why not... I'd measure the OD of the pipe going into the muffler though. The pipe I have now is 3" OD. The STS is slightly smaller OD. I think the stock exhaust is a metric size. So if the stock exhaust measure smaller than 3 inches, then I think it would be okay. If not prepare for battle.

Well here are some pictures after cutting the radiator hose some, and taking out the retaining clip. Big difference! It isn't finally assembled yet; I have to take it apart to clean it. The pipes and silicone have crap on the inside from being taken off and on so much, and being left open to the air. No problem, I might be able to gain some more clearance by taking another 3/8" off the hose. But it is really good right now; the pictures don't do it justice.

All in all I'm satisfied with everything now. I think maybe I should write an expanded installation manual for STS now

Make it easy on yourself and just get a stock "I" pipe. We were doing an install for
High Performance Pontiac magazine today and the car had and SLP "I" pipe. It is close, but would have to be altered some to fit. By far the easiest thing to do is get a stock I pipe and it works great. Thats what we did and it makes fast and easy.
NavySS, glad it made it easier for you.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about the SLP I pipe. Thanks again Billy, cutting the hose made all the difference. I'm close to being done with the install. I'm just waiting on my stock I-pipe I bought off another member. Then it's go time
