Default Induction Suggestions

I have a 2002 Trans Am Firehawk. I'm wanting to add some power to it by a supercharger or turbo charger. Does anyone have any suggestions on which would provide my hawk with more life? Which would provide more power?

After I get those answered I would like some suggestions on where to look for the products. I'm wanting to keep it pretty cheap. Proably around 5k-7k. It would be nice if I could get more than 400HP at the wheels.

Let me know what you all think.

unless you go with a sts rear mount turbo kit, you wont be able to go turbo with that budget, including fuel, tuning, install, all that good stuff. you can get a d1sc i believe installed for close to 7k with most of what u need.

I've been looking at the STS and Phamspeed kits. The way I hear you talking about STS is that you wouldn't recommend it unless one is on a budget. Is this accurate? Should I be looking at something else? How many other things should I be looking at? I've been looking around and found that everyone is recommending I change the rearend, fuel system, etc. What exactly does all this include?

well, i havent had much experience with the sts kit, and the kit has mixed views on whether it is good or not. do a search and you will find all the information you need to your hearts content on the sts kit. some people are making good power with it, but not running the kind of times they should be with that much power.

as far as looking into something else, like i said, it depends on what your budget is, what your power goals are, and if you are able to fab something up or buy a complete kit.

if you have a 6 speed, you will definately need to upgrade the clutch, highly recommended to upgrade to a 12 bolt(unless you dont plan on launching hard), some suspension stuff like subframes to stiffen up the chassis(dont want it flexing a lot under load), fuel stuff(bigger inj's, possibly 255 lph walbro fuel pump, maybe a fuel pressure regulator depending on what the installer says you need.) and other things here and there.

now its not all 100% necessary, however expect to be limited as to what you can do. some system come with everything you need in regards to fuel, mounting brackets, etc...

speak with a vendor such as Exotic performance plus(i hear they have good supercharger specials) or phamspeed or tti makes some decent turbo kits.

also depends on if you want AC or not too. i took my setup to (and recommend) futral motorsports, their quality of work is superb, however it takes forever to get it done since they are so backed up.

good luck with everything, do some research, and talk to those sponsors.

With that little of a budget, I don't see how you will put a turbo or supercharger on the car. 400 hp at wheels will be a little tuff for heads cams at 5800 ft altitude, but not impossible. Depends on if you want to be able to pass emissions. A turbo won't pass a visual inspection, although a sts should be able to get a EO no problem. Several supercharger kits have EOs.

What kind of budget would I need in order to add 400 hp to the wheels at 5800 feet? What is an EO?

My buddies 396 solid roller, 4bbl throttle bodied, all out race LT1 T/A put down 414rwhp here in Albuquerque.....that car was way past the head and cam stage...food for thought of what we face up here.

Most I ever dyno'ed is with my Procharger with cog set up and that lasted but a few seconds due to injectors running out, 498rwhp. I've gone turbocharged now....we will see.

STS would be my first choice, reason being emissions testing here in albuquerque. Not really too tough as all you have to do is pass a visual and a PCM scan for codes. I've been able to squeek by even though the car has gotten further and further away from being emissions legal. Two years ago, I paid to get passed I might have to do that again this year

I hear ya, I barely pulled 400 rwhp on my Incon setup at 9 psi of boost (91 octane). Lots of altitude = lots of heat and low power.

damn thats rough being up in the sky like that.my recommendation for him is to go look at phamspeed and sit down and write down EVERYTHING to the nuts and bolts that you WANT and NEED and see what it works out to.i have a thread that showed my price breakdown of a Phamspeed kit b4 they changed price and for the turbo kit itself minus the extras that i wanted i was at about $4500-$5k for everything down to couplers and clamps and tune.but you'll have to be satisfied with a certain amount of boost cause otherwise you
A) blow up your motor
B) get a forged motor
C) A&B

DD, never said I was emissions legal( I do have a cat, and my A.I.R), I paid "extra" for a passing cert last time(glad the kid manning the emission station was a car guy), but now the laws have changed, PCM scan and a visual of whats under the hood.....thats a joke. My car throws no codes...the joy of having HPtuners, and most the time they can care less of what they see under the hood. I took my 99 V6 bird to get emissioned, all the dude did was hook up his scanner, run it to 2000 grand and sent me on my way....didn't even look under the car or under the hood. I know getting my 98 passed this year will be too easy.

Gary, no joke...we have to practically sell our souls to get heads and cam power that the sea level guys enjoy...and we are FI'ed!!!!

As far as the dyno and track....lets just say i'm getting closer with every trip to work...tuning sucks.

Well, I'm a bit confused. What should I be looking at with an STS or Phamspeed turbo kit? How much RWHP? Also, how would I determine everything that I need? Any one in Albuquerque, I guess I wouldn't have to pass emissions since I could register in Rio Rancho. As I'm not to familar with modifying cars what all is needed if I get a turbo kit?

I've been reading about 50 threads and hundreds of posts without any answers to these kinds of questions. Can anyone help me out?

believe me its been answered.for rwhp it depends on your setup(a nice bost cam with decent heads will be 450-500rwhp.for an M6 clutch.you'll want heads cam injectors fu(42# or 60#),fuel pump, ls6 or other intake, exhaust,ALL thing to do with a turbo ie controller gauges intercooler etc.....and thats the basics for people staying on a stock shortblock and as a Daily driver.then you can always use some suspension rearend forged shortblock(SB).etc satisfied?
