Default Air to Water Intercooler cores

Do A2W intercoolers use the same cores as A2A intercoolers?? Or do A2W cores have different requirements? ie thinner "plates" in the bar and plate setup... or perhaps more fins between the plates??

What are the differences between them?

AIR/WATER has inlet and outlet connections for the water, and flows water inside it like a heater core. The air/air just uses outside airflow over the metal fins to cool it.

Those are more along the lines of differences on the end tanks, and a different functional use of the core. What I am talking about is only the core without any end tanks or fittings or anything like that... just the bar & plate or tube & fin or whatever...

Any differences between the actual cores? If I go out and buy just a core from spearco or griffin or whoever.... will they specify between A2A and A2W because the actual cores are different?

If so, what specifically are the differences??

you can use air to air cores as water to air. I used a very small standard a2a core for my tranny cooler.

specific a2w cores have much thinner "passages" on the water side than an air to air would on the non charge side.

Ah, that's what I was looking for... still sounds like an A2A core would work in a pinch though. Thanks!!

Any other differences?

Yes the A2W passages are smaller. An Air to air unit will work, but most air to air units are not water tested for leaks. You will have to have this done. We test all our cores when they come in. You would be suprised at the cores manufactures claim are water tight and leak like a Ford...

Interesting! I would think that if they pass the pressure test to keep the air in, they would in turn keep the water out. Where do they leak? I would think water's thicker than air...

that was exactly what I was thinking, if it wont let air out, how will it let water in?
