Default 9.61 @ 144.67! Almost caught Mike Brown...

7.9.05

I've been keeping a low profile lately with the car. I've been super busy for the first half of the year, and really let the car sit for long periods of time while I finished my BA (after 15 years), moved, and helped my pregnant wife.

I have had a running list of things I have been working on in general, and after moving to a new townhouse (on June 24th) the car was finally up for duty.

When I last had messed with the car, it had dynoed 756rwhp @ 21.5psi. Very impressive indeed.

I redynoed the car at Speed Inc. and the car was only hitting 18psi. Could have been belt slippage, could have been the warmer weather we are now getting, but the car was making 75rwhp less on the dyno this time.

Needless to say I started to manage down my expectations, after all, if the car is losing power to belt slippage or weather (heat), then it's gonna be slower. I talked to a few friends who have been running blowers for a few years, and they all said that they lose 1-3 psi at the hottest parts of the year. So worst case I could just attribute the boost loss to that.

Magnus (Keith with HPTuners) planned to meet up at 8am this morning. I woke up at 6am, my guts churning. Car was down on power and I'm going to make passes on the car for the first time in a year, and in the middle of July to boot! So to calm myself I jumped on the elliptical machine and cranked it up to 7... Still feeling hyper. I threw on some clothes and drove over the Meth Kastl were the car sleeps.

We got to US41 around 10:15AM. www.ThirdGen.Org was having a rental and I signed up kind of in secret, since I had no idea prior to the rental if the car was gonna make it. We unstrapped the car, rolled it off, and then I worked on an inner fender spot that has been rubbing the driver's side slick. Fixed that and then put the car back on the ground. Went through the check list... plug wires on... check. Oil level.... check. Coolant level... little low... topped it up. Trans fluid... check. Blower belt.... tightened it up more.

We put the rear shocks at 4/4, and the fronts at 1/1, very typical setup for my first passes when going to US41.

Did my burnout, staged, hit the 'brake. And ran my first 9 second pass!

Here are all the runs:

9.96@137.62 / 1.45/ 6.325/ 104.14/ 11:02AM (screwed up 2-3 shift)
9.65@143.74/ 1.46/ 6.237/ 114.76/ 11.22AM
9.61@144.67/ 1.49/ 6.221/ 115.43 12.03PM
9.66@143.16/ 1.45/ 6.234/ 114.47 12.36PM (hit rev limiter on 1-2 hard)
9.90@134.70/ 1.51/ 6.405/ 112.52 1.22PM (issues; scary traction too)

Let me save this now, and then add more....

Okay I'm back. On the first pass, I screwed up the 2-3 shift, but was excited when I saw the car still ran it's first 9 second pass! I cooled the car down, and then Magnus and I talked about how the car left and how it went down the track. We decided to tighten the rear shocks to 6/6 since the car was all over the track in 2nd gear. We let it cool off for a while, but in my head, I thinking it might hit a 9.8@139 or so... But I managed my expectations, and said what the heck, let's just see.

Made another hit, and the car tracked a lot better. Run felt great... Got the slip... OMG a 9.65!

We cooled the car down longer this time and went over possible changes I could make on the next pass. We decided to shift a little higher, and changed the shift lite setting to 6600.

Next hit.. 9.61@144.67!!!!!! I was happy.

I made two runs after that, and the next one I hit the rev limiter hard on 1-2.

The last one was after the lunch break, and the car was very loose and sloppy down the track. I coasted at 2/3 track and still ran a 9 second pass. The car was basically sideways on that pass and felt skeery.

My slicks are toast I think so I have to decide on whether to stay with 28x10.5's or go to something wider or taller. I was going thru the lites at 6800-6900 which was fine, but even when the car cut 1.45's it was spinning. The slicks were spinning 2-4 revolutions on most passes. I ran the slicks at 12 psi mostly. I marked them with Iggy's shoe polish and by the end of the day the slicks had moved an inch on the rims.

I want to thank Magnus, Z8's, Intmd8, The rest of the Speed Inc. crew (Tom, Larry, Dan & Mike), Bob @ Kurgan Motorsportsw, Kurt @ W2W, and last of all but not least KP for ideas on how the car might do, and keeping me from procrastinating. I'll also give Mike Brown a shout out. I read and reread your two threads about your CE and man oh man I wanted to run something good!

I came up with a list of things I need to do on the car, and will hopefully finish them all for NvsS. None of them would keep the car down very long.

Say it isnt so....PSJ in the 9's?? Good runs man. I bet all the issues you have had with this deal it finally feels good to be rewarded with a string of good passes. Sounds like deeper 9's are in your future.

Phil there was a siting of a pig flying over the cornfields of Morocco Indiana.... Dare to dream... LOL.

Never lost a blower belt on any passes, that was pretty darn cool. The Sikora/Kurgan strut brace is working!

Congrats, even though I got on your case a lot about getting the car out with finishing school, new house and new baby on the way I can understand the priorities.

Thats great considering it was 86 degrees out when you made your best pass, I came up with 2700' DA and running 145 in that heat is awesome. Gota give a thumbs up for hopping in the car after almost a year at last years N vs S and cranking out a bunch of nine second passes.

I'm sure its rough to type with your fingers still clenched to the steering wheel, good thing its removable

Congrats again and looking forward to seeing it in BG.

I may have missed it somewhere.. but what gears are you running, and what RPM are you turning when you go thru the traps?

Btw, congrats on the entry to the single digit club

Great job. Glad I could inspire you. Will be fun to line them up at N vs S. Just for fun though since I can't be in that class. See what that race car can do against my street car.
