Default I think I'm gonna buy a mustang...

LOL!

I want an old crappy foxbody to just tear down to the frame and build a full force drag car. I figure it'd be a good learning experience and what not. You seen a ton of turbo foxbodies these days. When I'm finished with my camaro I should be in the mid 700's without the juice. I think thats pretty damn respectable for "could be" daily driver, I just don't want to butcher this car up anymore. I've just always had the idea in the back of my head. Find an old beatup one and 4-link/tub that hoe. I've heard some things about this turbo mustangs site. Has anybody else gone down the path of a turbo older body stang before? Any good resources? I know there are a freakin buttload of message boards, which are the most serious and carry the best sponser lists?

Thanks,
Andy

This really isn't that bad of an idea. A buddy of mine has actually decided that we are going to do something similar to this with his mid '90s Cobra. I think he said it's a '94, and I know it has a 5.0. The only thing is, we are going to leave it stock-suspended to run some of the 10.5 and Drag Radial classes around our area. I think he is leaning towards a turbo 331, and he wants to retain a 5 spd, but of course upgrade from the T5. Last I knew he was talking a Tremec.

bleh, to hell with a manual... If I wanna drive a stick I'll drive one of my other two cars. I'd like to build a serious drag car from scratch. I might stick with the stock suspension though... the 10.5 stuff is fun.

I'm running a TH400 in my car, and have the same ultimate goals, but he thinks he has something to prove with running a stick. Should be interesting to watch, at least.

Not until the mustang outruns the Camaro... then we'll talk.

A Stang isn't much cheaper to build than a F-body Our shop builds Mustangs daily for the drags.Anything from a 12 second car to 7 second cars.
Make sure your first plan is a DFI since Ford computers just suck

I know that some of the things we do to our rides, we are going to use some of the same parts. Turbos, some of the accesories (BOV, wastegate, etc), engine management, etc. Kinda do R&D for each other at the same time. We both plan to use W/A intercoolers, etc. Should be cool.

are you goin to run a ford motor or 1st gen chevy motor? i would think it be easier/cheaper to build a chevy powered mustang. aint a r, i like dragracing in either form....sept honda, cuss those take to long to run the strip, got better things to do with 20 seconds, like scratch my *** or somthing...

Yep!

I thought about doing the same thing Armageddon. The only thing that is actually "cheaper" is the car itself. Engine, drivetrain, suspension etc etc are not to far off from LS1's. Just start pricing things out, thats how I figured it out for myself.

There is no escaping it, this hobby is just expensive.

There is no argueing that the aftermarket support for Mustangs blows the LS1 aftermarket out of the water, at least for right now. I realize the LS1 segment is catching up, but we still have a ways to go. Thumb through any one of the Mustang magazines (there are several), and look at how much a cent. supercharger kit is for a Fox-bodied mustang. Then grab GMHTP (pretty much our only one), and look at the prices in there. There is still quite a difference, but I beleive that a lot of that has to do with volume as well.

Intercoolers aren't included with those kits.

The smallblock thing would probably be the cheapest. Run a big turbo and a glide. BS3 160lb hrmmmm......

why not pick up a cheap 3rd gen and stick with all chevy.other than a rear end, suspension parts are closely matched and they hook very well also.

If you can get a good maf signal, you can run 700rwhp no problem with 60's and a BA2800 maf with great street manners, if that is important, all on a stock EEC with tune, but for a race car, or agressive cam, a DFI setup could be beneficial.

The mustangs are lighter, so that is a benefit. You dont need a $4000 rear end, just a good axles and diff on a ford 8.8 makes them a little more affordable to build. Still not cheap by any stretch. Trying to make 400 rwhp NA on a ford motor will cost you a pretty penny thats for sure

now if you were to put a LS1 in a mustang

Stangs are much easier to make light especially if you start with a notch...and when it comes to racing, the second most expensive parts are weight-reduction parts (behind motor stuff).

Start lighter and go faster for the same price...not cheap, but cheaper in the long run and easier on parts.
