Default Ballpark cost for Single Turbo in Fox Mustang LS1

I'm researching some info for my brother.

We're wondering what a ballpark single turbo setup would cost for an 346 LS1 in a 89 Notchback Mustang.

The turbo setup should include:
  • Turbo
  • BOV
  • hot and cold piping
  • reversed 6.0 manifolds if possible
  • All vaccum and misc lines ran
  • Front Mount Intercooler
  • boost would prefer to come on about 2500 (full boost) and hold to redline
He's looking for 550 RWHP on pump gas, with occasional 600 RWHP if needed.
Transmission - Rossler TH400, stall choice up to builder of turbo kit.
Stock 346 with '02 Z06 cam, forged Diamond pistons, forged rods
Intercooler (front mount)
And above all, want it dead reliable, would sacrifice power/etc to be dead nuts reliable.

gonne be tough getting 550 rwhp through a th400 with a high compression engine. either drop the compression so you can boost more or your going to need to run a meth type mixture to boost enough without blowing your motor.

He's doing pistons...so compression is whatever.

There 1000 guys on tm.com that can build you a completly custom kit using out of the box 5.0 shorties (with new flanges) and they'll make whatever you want them to make and probably be pretty cheap. Brent at tm.com makes 1000 or 1100 at the wheels with a kit he made and a turbo from Majestic turbo in Dallas. 550rw with an A/A I think would be pretty easy with something like a T70 or even a 76 if you wanted to grow with it.

Oh, and IMO a T400 would be annoying on the street. Spend the money to put a 4L80 in, or make it a T56 car.

This is what I want eventually with a nice looking notchback. T56, several hundred horsepower from twins and an LS1, with a fox-chassis.

Sorry, I meant to put that a Gear Vendor's Overdrive would be coupled to the TH400.

That would be appropriate, IMO. I figured around that much.

HAH! you beat me to posting this question, i'm planning on the same exact project!
boostaholic, does the figure include a fule system or is this is just for the turbo, piping, and intercooler?

what are you going to do about the engine mounts?

if any one has any more info or tips please share them with us!

How big of a DP do u want to run??? How big of a turbo?? Stenod used solid custommade motor mounts on my car.... price also depends on if u want stuff in the stock locations or if you are willing to move and cut stuf to make it fit.

I have an AJE tubular K member for a 4.6L I'm using, with 4.6L motor mounts (they damned near bolt up as-is). PLENTY of room for turbo stuff, I can fit a 5" DP if I had to.

With turbo torque you don't need much gear. Run a 3.08 and forget the GV....I did and it's nice on the street...2700rpm on the 4lane.

I like that advice. Of course being a notch wont hurt either since they're a little more weight friendly then what your LSx engine is used to.

That would be turbo piping, intercooler, turbocharger, bov, wastegate, boost gauge, map sensor, etc. - all turbo related stuff.

You would have to upgrade the fuel system, and do PCM programming also - thats a given with any forced induction system though.

My turbo hatch 5.0 is on its way to completion.

I have about $1500 in my whole turbo kit with everything.

LS1 of undisclosed specs and for the turbo kit I used: used 6.0L manifolds flipped/crossed, GT42 turbocharger, Tial 38mm wastegate, Tial 50mm BOV, autometer boost gauge etc

Easy project....car should weigh about 2600lbs plus me..hoping to need a chute on my daily driver

I have HP tuners as well..so ill proba

Brains, how's the longevity of the aftermarket K-members in the Mustang world? Do they crack, etc like they do in the F-body versions?

Also, that 4.6K from AJE bolted right in to your notch w/out issue? Does it allow you to run the same steering rack, etc?

I think Boostd Bill has always ran an aftermarket K, may check with him. I say do the 4 valve like he is, just in a 5.4.... my car deserves that...

AJE has a pretty good rep, and I got it for a fair price (200). Haven't heard of many failures across the board though.

I'm eventually converting my coupe to all SN95 hardware. SN95 K-member, tubular control arms, aftermarket coil-over struts, 5 lug, etc. It all more or less bolts into the car, with the K member needing a couple holes elongated just a touch. The rack will bolt up the same, although I'm considering swapping to a different steering shaft to get more room (the Ford unit has a huge abortion in the middle of it that takes up a ton of space). If I do that I'll probably go manual rack at the same time since the car is so light, but we'll see.

Just gotta get ZAngel's turbo car out of the darned garage so I can go back to work on my Mustang project!!!

I just took a stock 98 cobra K-member and bolted in my car...I did mine on a budget and have less than 5k in the whole car including car. And so far its a pretty neat ls1/turbo setup.

mine has a motor plate. Should be fairly easy to do a turbo....I already have a gt42 74 and a 4in thick intercooler. I want to do a w2a though.
