Default New to forced induction, need help!

I recently had a 355 Lt4 built by LS1 Speed with a forged bottom end and 8.75:1 cr. and I am running a procharger with twin intercoolers and about 6 lbs of boost right now. The problem is that there is oil coming out of my breathers and getting on my valve covers and headers, and every time I pull the plugs about 6 of them are covered with oil. Does this mean that the rings have not seated or what? Btw the motor has just over 1000 miles on it. What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like you have a metric ****-ton of blow by. I concur with what the above poster said.

If all they did was build the motor, they may be off the hook. How you install it and add enough crancase ventilation is the key. A blown motor need extra ventilation because more build up in the crankcase.

I had to go with 2 breathers per valve cover, and another directly to the crancase through an extra bung in the front of the oil pan. I still get a little oil out of one of the pass. side breathers after a nice boost run.

I don't like the plugs covered in oil, though.

most shops wouldn't man up and fix it anyway, I've never dealt with speed inc so I can't comment on their service. If the motor was not properly ventilated or broken in (which is probable what they'll say happened regardless of the truth) its your fault. If the rings were gaped improperly or there was an assembly error you can blame them.

again, not speaking about speed inc when making those comments, just performance shops in general.

I can't really just take it back because they are in Illinois and I am in Utah... I wish I could, maybe I could try more breathers and what about the plugs covered in oil? Anything I could do to remedy that? Please don't tell me I need new rings or something major like that!

I'd call Speed and ask them, there customer service is top notch, but ya I'd say if you don't have any breathers on your car that is probably the problem. Might also want to look into a vacuum pump.

I already have one breather in each valve cover, but DeltaT said he has two in each.

How did you break in the motor? Did you stay out of boost until it was broken in? Did you get a very good tune on it before you started boosting?

I would start with new plugs and an oil change. Make sure you don't put any 'extra' oil in. That can cause the same types of problems you're noticing.

Take a modest drive, staying out of boost. Maybe 10 miles. Check your plugs. If they are oily, you need to do a compression check, then a leakdown test.

If they are just black, you might be running very rich.

What are you using to tune this beast?

I was told to break it in by taking it out on the street and speed up and let it slow itself down several times and just get 100 miles on it and get it dyno tuned. So thats what I did except I waited a little longer than 100 miles to get it on a dyno and before then I did not build any boost. I sent my pcm into pcm for less to get it in the ballpark before I even started the new motor and I bought LT1 Edit and a laptop to do further tuning on a dyno. So I took it down to the dyno and as soon as I romped on it oil just poured out of the breathers, so needless to say I called it quits on the dyno until I figured this out. While on the dyno it made 400 hp and 417 tq through a 3000 stall converter and 6 lbs of boost. But on a better note I changed the plugs about 2 weeks ago and took the belt off the blower to see if that would help with the oil on the plugs, so I checked my plugs today and now only 2 of them still have oil on them!

What plugs are you running? Are they colder or hotter than stock? What's your plug gap?
