Default What would the symptoms be if my oil scavenge pump is going out?

I've got an Incon stage 1 kit and it's been slowly leaking oil from the scavenge pump for several months but it's only been a couple drops per day until recently. Now it is leaking considerably more, leaving a puddle the size of a soccer ball when parked overnight. Also it smokes considerably on a cold start and until it warms up. Is it time to replace the scavenge pump or should I be looking for a different problem? Also the motor is completely stock save for upgraded injectors and valvesprings.

Is there oil coming out of the innercoolers? If so yes the pump for the turbos is gone. They make a rebuild kit for it though. I dont know where to get it though <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> .

Not that I've noticed, I'll have to check tonight when I get home from work. I noticed oil definitely coming out of the pump itself, but nowhere else. Would a scavenge pump problem result in the car smoking?

I consider myself a veteran of the scavenge pump war. Is that a BOC song?

Anyway, you just need to replace one of the interior parts. Its the flat rubber disc thats visible if you take off the valve assembly cap. It goes for about $20. That is all that is wrong.

If you want to wait 24 hours (I am only online at work), I can give you the specific P/N and where to order it from. Hell, if you PM me, I'll give you my phone number, and you can call me tonight. Or, you can do a search on LS1.com as Elmer has a pretty comprehensive set of instructions on this. He replaced both the disc and the white plastic part that attaches to the plungers. I found it necessary only to replace the disc. To do the disc, you don't have to take apart as much.

Unfortunately, this piece has a limited life, and this will turn into a never ending story. But, if all I have to do is replace this every year and a half, I can live with that.

Its strange. The rest of the pump is built so solidly. It's almost as if the design team realised they were going to go over budget after they designed everything else, and had to skimp on the valve part of it.

You're correct, Gary, it could also be the check valves. But, I've had two check valves go because of that manufacturing defect, and the symtoms were complete failure of the pump to pump, and oil smoke sidewalk to sidewalk on the road.

The diaphram replacement fixed my last issue which was just like he described....oil leaking and a slight smell of oil burning...but I was leaving golf ball sized drops, not soccer ball.

But Gary does bring up a good point. Check the check valves when you replace the diaphram.

The parts that fail is either the check valve or the diaphragm (spelling). With any pump of this design the checks or most like the diaphragm is the limiting factor. Pumps of this design are not meant for continous duty. They are meant for periodic use, thats why they are used to drain/fill tanks, pump gases. They are not meant for continous circulation pumps. Like stated the parts are cheap at under $20. Some last a long time, if you do a lot of stop and go driving. They do not last long for people that do a lot of highway miles. If you the leaks get to bad you will damage the seals on the turbo, so watch out. The alternatives are pumps from like weldon (model 9200) and one from Italy. These use the same design as a fuel pump, but are expensive at $400 range. Several of us have switched to the weldon 9200 pump with no problems. The one from Italy (no information on manufacturer) works well also.

Symptoms could be as you have a external leak in the pump, or smoking out the exhuast. If you get oil in intercooler then you have pushed through the seals in the turbo, and most likely damaged the seals.

Gary

Sorry to not reply for so long, was moving so no computer access. Thanks everybody for your input, I really appreciate it. I think I am just going to replace this unit with SmokinHawk's (PMed you!) as I'm pretty busy and no veteran of pumps like this. Once I get the new one on I think I'll disect the old one so I'll know what to replace next time. Thanks again.

Mine only smokes when I first start it up, and even then while I can see it in my rear view mirror, it's hardly sidewalk-to-sidewalk. I still haven't checked the intercoolers, I will do that probably tomorrow. Been busy since moving. Thanks again everyone.
