Default Budget turbo kit questions

after some hard considerations and first hand looks at kits, I don't want to go nitrous, but I do wanna add something to my car.

The way it's lookin I'll have 4,000 ish to spend on the kit, I don't need alot, my motor is entirely stock, the valvetrain is all upgraded. ATA is fine, I'm going for as much power on stock heads/cam and what not as I can get in that 4000. (I will be upgrading stuff later, but this is what I have to work with now)

Suggestions?

Do heads and cam for that money. A full on turbo kit that makes even min. amount of HP will set you back almost twice that much by the time you're done and that's not considering a motor build either. Turbo's are a very expensive venture, H&C will satisfy most peoples desire for more power. If your car is a daily driver you better buy a bus ticket also if you're going to go the turbo route. Turbo systems are allot more involved than most people ever think and it's all the extra little stuff that kills the budget. Just my .02 but budget and turbo don't go together which I'm sure you're about to hear from others.

Good luck,

Brett

what about all the kits I see for turbo's like STS, the budget phamspeed and what not

they are all under 4000, what else do I need thats not included in those kits besides gauges( which I already have)

I also will be doing the install myself, and I have extra to get it tuned.

yeah good rule of thumb is take the price of the kit, and then double it for all the requirements to actually run it with out blowing something up.

Fuel injectors, fuel pump, rear end, tranny, bottom end, tuning, and then the **** that you lose or break on the install....

really if your not stupid about it, you can get away with the kit + an upgraded fuel system. You can sometimes find the kit for $3500 in the GP section, or some of the vendors may sell it for that especially if you buy your injectors, etc from them as well. ALso look in the for sale section here, these pop up in there more often than you would think.

so lets say:
1 kit $3500
2 fuel pump/injectors $300-$400 depending on how much shopping around you do
3 tuning $500

I'd save up around $4600-$4700 to allow some room for dinky stuff you will need. The guys at STS have told me you can get away with a decent setup for around $5000 from them new. (injectors, tuning, etc)

Its only as bad as everyone says if you don't plan ahead or shop around (or if you start beating the wee our of your car when its installed)

You can get a turbo setup for $4000. And you say you have money for a tune. Just make sure you get the fuel upgrades and a tune. If its a auto...you will need a trans sooner then later. If your going turbo just make sure you have done your research on what is involved in having a turbo....just dont jump into it.

Well I plan on dumping this 4000 into a clutch, a rear end, new injectors/fuel pump
and maybe a cam if theres enough left over

Then i'll save up another 4000 and buy the kit

what all does that involve besides a cam/valvesprings/pushrods?

I don't wanna break into it as far as pistons and what not go, I couldn't afford to have someone do it and I wouldn't know how to do it myself.

I've done 1 cam install so I know what to do there.

my plan is to get my turbo setup DIY style (i have 5 other friends doing this right now, so we are trying to get group discounts from vendors...any vendors out there gimmi a pm if you want our money =)) so this coming summer i will have the turbo running 500ish hp (same power lvl i am running right now with my nitrous)...then my motor is getting built...then my tranny is getting built...then rearend. all in all i plan on spending 15k over the course of the next 3 years to do it, it is also not my DD so if i break somthing...it can sit in my garage till i have the cash to fix it.

Forged Pistons at least well give you a nice security blanket. If you run some boost and break a ring land you can score the cylinder walls up pretty bad and then it will cost you a lot more to fix.

I disagree. I think a rear mount turbo setup can be done for $2K or less and no other driveline modifications need to be made. Think about it.
No changes to exhaust manifold
No intercooler necessary
No muffler.
Turbo under $500 on ebay
Tubing from the turbo to the intake $500 or less
Oil pump to feed the turbo and other related plumbing $500 or less
Larger injectors and some PCM programming $500

these companies out there are earning their keep,to get a full bolt on kit with everything included such as STS, ground Zero, Hi flo, etc for $4000 is darn good considering what your getting, new nice turbo, new BOV,wastegate, etc.sure it can be done cheaper, thats why theres the website www.junkyardturbos.com or whatever, but the quality is much downgraded.

hi flo all the way baby... saving my money...

you do get what you pay for, and the pictures speak for themselves on that hi flo kit... not to mention it includes intercooler, which most other kits charge you for, and all the hardware to relocate battery and ac. BOV and wastegate as well... most other kits don't include IC and BOV in their "base" kit
