Default Misconceptions / ATI-D1SC

NOw i just got my kit and havent installed it yet but i see that alot of guys with the 8lb kit only see 5 or so pounds. whats up with that. for the money i paid i better damn well see 8lbs and close to the promised 500hp at the wheels. if not whats the right pulley needed to see 8 or more pounds and also whats the max SAFE amoutn of psi you can run on an LS1 with just about all the bolt ons other than heads and a cam.

My Kit.
ATI-D1sc 8lb tuner.
42.5lb inj
walboro inline f/pump

Leave me suttin to read here fellas.. imput is appreciated. kyle 98 TA

I think the main problem is that ATI is sending the wrong pullies out, I recently got my kit, the ATI D-1SC 8lb kit, and ATI sent out a 4.00 pully, which is a 5psi pully, I now got a 3.60" pully, I believe thats the 8lb...

Look and see what size pully you have on the charger..

Let me try to clarify as I think there is some confusion and bad info floating around. Although I purchased an 8 PSI kit (which by the way came with a 4" pulley) I never expected to see more than 5 PSI with it since I have ported LS6 heads. When ATI says 8 PSI they are talking about on stock LS1 heads. If you have upgraded your heads to better flowing heads, you will not see 8 PSI with an 8 PSI kit beacuse your heads flow a lot better than stock and the psi does not build as easily. That said, your are still moving the same volume of air, but just seeing less psi. Someone correct me if I am wrong, please... Does that make sense?

Alex, what you say is true. Boost is just a measurement of positive pressure at the intake. Less restriction through the motor and exhaust would allow the same amount of air to flow without the same build-up of pressure.

But on a completely stock engine (like mine) with stock exhaust manifolds, the blower should make what it is rated at. For reference, my D-1SC came with the 3.60 pulley. It makes exactly 8 pounds max at 5,900 RPMs.

Actually, if you port the heads and dont change the blower pulley(s), you will see less boost because of MORE airflow.

A supercharger will only flow a certain CFM at a certain RPM.

Lets say that you have it pullied to flow 1000 cfm at 6k rpms. You see 9psi of boost, meaning that not all 1000cfm is getting into the cylinder. If it was, you would have 0psi boost.

Now if you port the heads and see 6lbs of boost, you are flowing more air and using more of the available CFM, rather than it backing up in the intake manifold.

I plan on a 10lb pulley and expect to see ~6lb on a fully ported 383.

Like LS1Bird was saying with his pulley making 8# on a stock motor, my pulley (4.0) makes 5# on a stock motor. Same engine, just my pulley makes the sc flow less air than his, so mine builds up less pressure in the intake.

I find some of our experiences contradictory at best. I can't provide results on a stock motor, but my D1SC with the 4.0" pulley makes 5 PSI with my LS6 ported heads and headers. I am going to be swapping to a 3.8" puley to get a pound more boost out of it.

It is easier to think of it as the amount of air getting into your engine.
8 psi on unported is less air than 5 psi on ported heads with the same blower pulley.
If you were to increase your boost on the ported head car to 8 psi from 5 psi you would have a hell of a lot more air in there and it would stand to reason that you could damage your engine.
Like INTMD8 said, the boost reading is air not being used by your engine.
