Default ATI Procharger Decisions

Guys/Gals:

I need a little help in my decision for the ATI setup.. I have a 1998 TransAm WS6, all stock. I am having a hard time deciding between the 5-7psi system and the 8+psi system.

I know I am going to need programming (who do I get this through), 42# injectors (what kind), and a fuel pump upgrade (what kind, in-tank or just add-on in-line).

I assume I need to get a new set of sparkplugs (probably TR6's).

Could you shoot me some suggestions on which system to get and whether to get the P1SC or the D1SC blower unit.

Thanks.
Rick

You could do a search to answer your question, but here is a little help b/c I asked the same questions about 2 weeks ago.

If you plan on building a monster go with the D1-SC better impeller and more room to upgrade. If you plan on going higher than 500 hp then you will need to upgrade the bottom end of you motor. If you go higher than 5psi you will also need an aftermarket fuel pump to go along with the mods that you mentioned. You really need to do a search of past post and all your questions will be answered there.

Good luck to ya

Another thing...

Go to yahoo and search ATI Procharger and go to their homepage and order a free catalog. Lots of info on different set ups there too.

Don't forget about the high stock compression, and it may not hurt to look into getting a holley aluminum ls6 intake manifold.

I was at that same decision point a few months ago. I went with the 8# tuner w/ D-1SC. Why? I never know what I might do with this car someday, so I wanted some room to grow. And the D-1SC at 8# is just starting to do any real work since it's upper end is like 32# or something, so on my stock engine it should last a good long time.

I like knowing my car is running like mad, and the blower is at the low end of its true capability. Room for growth in the engine!

I would also suggest checking some of the site spouncers, I believe MMS was selling a full ATI kit and some others may also.
By full kit I mean procharger setup, injectors, programming, and *maybe* fuel pump.
I also saw were MMS had a special upgrade kit as well, with a single intercooler and some other items.

As for what I would go with, if you plan to do anything more with the car I would go with the D1SC head unit, 42bls injectors and look for a good in-tank pump setup.

unless you are going to improve your bottom end, don't go over 8#. you shouldn't need different injectors, at least not right away, do a wide-band O2 reading before you dump the money into them. ATI includes an auxillary in-line fuel pump so you have that covered too. TR6's are a good choice too but still do plug readings. you can get programming software from www.carputing.com. it is $550 but WELL worth it and almost a nessity with a blower of any kind. the P1-sc should more than handle your needs now and in the future. get a fuel pressure and boost gauge too.

I was where you were several months ago and I myself went with the D1SC. Here are the two things you should consider before making your choose. One thing that I wish I had known when I bought mine is that the D1SC comes with a one year warrenty. The P1SC also comes with a one year standard warrenty but for $49 you can buy a three year extended warrenty(three years from the date of purchase). Not saying this would have swayed my decision, but I wish I would have known that when I bought the blower.

The more important factor to me was personal reference. That endorsement clearly went to the D1SC. One of the owners of a big local Mustang shop had lots of expereince with both blowers on his own forged internal blown Saleen. He had nothing but problems with the P1SC and even had probalems getting ATI to cover it after a while. He stepped up to the D1SC and has had 0 probelms with it since. He highly recommended the D1 and was pushing his D1 way harder than 8 psi. I believe he was running 15 at the time, but wasn't sure. Having seen his setup 15 is VERY believable! That endorsement, as well as what I read on this board, was enough for me.

Good luck with your decision.

Go with the D-1SC, I'm only getting 4psi out of the car as it is, car has a lot more potential with a smaller pully...

The D1 gives more boost than the P1 using the same blower pulley. Unless you get the P-1SCH or D-1 you wont benefit from the nice impeller design. I'm very satisfied with my D-1SC but I'm not putting down the P-1SC either. I'm sure its just fine. It all depends on your plans for the car. You get what you pay for.

I say that if you are going to build a monster motor then do what I did and buy the F1. I made 516 with 7 psi(D1-sc) But for my motor and CR I needed more flow and boost. So I would say get the F1 and run about 18 psi..lol

I think you should consider doing the following:

1) D1SC tuner kit

2) Dual intank Walbro 340's with AFPR and return line

3)50# injectors

4) LS1 edit tuning

Biggest headers and highest flowing exhaust you can get

That way when you rebuild the motor the fuel system and exhaust is good to over 600RWHP. You may run a stock motor for 2-3 years but eventually EVERYONE rebuilds

Cheers,
Chris

All stock now? If you add headers and a cat back and/or cam you will LOOSE boost(volume/flow) so plan ahead! Go with the D1 8# 42's will work on ALL STOCK, 50's if you mod up ,going to need a pump 4 sure. Big *** wires , plugs.

Headers or a cam won't make you lose volume/flow. You will loose some restriction in the motors breathing, which shows as lower boost.

I'm semi-happy with mine at the moment. I'm only at 5# and I don't think that really justifies the cost. Once the new crank pulley gets here I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune. I like what chris said in his last post, but I didn't go that extreme on the fuel. But I'm not really planning on 600hp either.

Yet.

WARNING! Stay away from ATI Prochargers. They are the biggest pieces of **** on the market.I had the P600 and it leaked oil from day one.I sent it back only to pay $800.00 for a rebuild cause they would not cover it under warranty,250 miles later is seized up,They cut me a deal on the D-1.That piece of crap leaked oil from day one also, again they would not warranty it,They would not even sell me the seal so I could repair it.I took the bearings from the P600 to a bearing shop to replace the "quality" bearings,The guy at the counter almost fell over laughing hiss *** off.He showed me on what they call a Abec scale on 1 to 5 and the prochargers have the #1.The cheapest bearings money can buy.And forget customer service after the sale. You've been warned.........
