Default What Rear End Gear Ratio.

I have a 98 Vette with stock gears 3.42, for some reason I had alway believed that 3.73 where stock.

Well now that I know that I have Iam thinking of upgrading to either 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10's. What do you guys recomend. I have herd that the 4.10 might make you shift into fourth b4 the quartermile is up, unless you like to push it through the checkered flag at 6800RPM's.

I was leaning towards 3.73 because Iam afraid of loosing traction on the launch with my street tires. Iam sure with slicks 3.90 and 4.10 wont be a problem to hook up with a couple of practice runs. But I dont like using the slick unless I have to. I dont have the money to replace my tranny every couple of months.

So what do you guys think will get me down the track the fastest?

Do you have a power adder, what are you mods? What are you shift points?

You must have an M6 right?

When I go boost I am running 4.10's if I go SC and 3.73's if I go turbo..

Currently I have GWP stage 2 kit with their heads and cam. On the dyno 531@6000/502@5250. I would like to shift 6000RPM to save engine life but if Iam ever behind in a race I wont be afraid to push her to 6500 to 6700 RPM's where I should have about 550+rwhp.

Hey Vince

Why do you recomend 4.10 for the blower and 3.73 for turbo? Is it because the turbo has too much torque and then traction on the launch would be an issue.

with the 4.10's wouldnt you be afraid of having to shift into 4th gear at the end of the track, you can loose allot of valuable time on a shift with a manual tranny?

Please elaborate, When I make my decisions I like to be well informed of why I would go with a certain mod over another.

My rationale on the 3.73's for turbo is I do not want too much gear, but a little more than 3.42's to get me into boost quicker. The 4.10's for me is good for a M6 SC'd car to get you to the boost quicker because of the linear power increase going thru the rpm band.. This is just my view.. Others might think otherwise..

Good perspective about the 4.10.

pro: 1)get to boost quicker

con: 1)might have to take her to 6800rpm to finish in 3rd gear or have to shift into fourth

Anyone else?

The C5 with 3.90's are awesome NA here right now. I'm sure they'll be great with the blower too.

Since Iam going to be doing most of my runs on street tires I was thinking that if I use the 4.10 I might just be able to do my launch from second gear that way I still save my self the extra shift to fourth at the end of the track.

As it is now, on street tires, 1st gear is very difficult to get a good launch and keep the tires hooked until redline. I find my self shifting early out of first (4500-5000rpm) to avoid the tires from braking loose. I have practiced the foot action of lightly coming of the gas as I aproach redline in first but this is really difficult to do in a race beacuse all you want to really do is step on the gas and not look back the entire way down the track.

Has anyone with 4.10 tried launching directly out of second gear?

I've been thinking about getting some gears soon too. If I did, they'd be 4.10's for all the reasons posted above. Launching in 2nd though, don't know about that. I plan on switching to full time drag radials in the back when my current street tires wear out. Like you said, they break loose as first builds up now, I can't imagine how quick it'd happen with 4.10's . Be spinning hard going into 2nd also.

Can someone confirm this...

I had a person on another forum tell me that if I went from my current 3.42 to lets say a 4.10. my rwhp and rwtq number will decrease. Does this make sence to anyone or has this guy been smelling too many exhaust & gas fumes.

I would think the opposite. Your power number should increase across the board? maybe not your flywheel power but rear whell should go up? right?

BLMONGOOSE 4.10 e.t streets only way to maximize your combo.Relative to dollars you have in setup already m.t are great bang for the buck,will not spin with good burnout.Dump the clutch at 5000k keep it stomped on all shifts,if clutch holds car should run low 11s.You will be in 4th regardless of ratios you mentioned.Second gear launch will kill 60ft times.SLP has 16x8 takeoff wheels for 50 bucks each.

4.11's will make the car hook worse.

You won't have traction thru 3 gears.

ah they got tires for that problem.. you're not going to hook on the street anyway.

i agree with all the above, boost is what makes hp...sc needs rpm to make boost, and turbos need load to make boost.

rpm = high gearing numerically
load = low gearing numerically

just remember for your combo, the most efficient for 1/4 mile will still be at whatever your max rpm is in your high gear on the appropriate tire etc etc.

FI can put down high mph in the 1/4. I wouldn't want to have to shift into 5th since that gear sucks at the end of the 1/4. I'd stay with 3.90's.
