Default can an intercooler be too big?

Like the title says. Its not for a LSx motor. Its for my 86 glh 2.2 turbo dodge omni. This is my winter/ ice racing car. If i could fit it I was thinking of using the 4 inch obx intercooler or would that be overkill? power output will only be between 250-300 whp

if your flowing to much and not getting the cooling you need then its to big.

id say if your only trying for 300whp, then just use the 3" core.

A lot of people have used the Dodge Cummins intercooler for the Dodge 2.2 and 2.5 engines, so you won't have a problem with the OBX intercooler. Gus Mahon and Gary Donovon both have websites providing much info on adding power to these engines. Gus was killed on his motorcycle approx one year ago, so his site may be down now, but he was a pioneer on the little Dodge engines. Gary Donovon has an '85 Reliant bordering on the nines in the 1/4 mile with a 2.2 turbo. The '86 GLHS (the '85 wasn't turbo'd) was a very unique one year only body style with the turbo added, cool car! Bob

only 300 compared to shooting for 1000

i had a 88 dodge omni back in high school (non turbo) it has over 240k on it with no major engine work other then replacing the head gaskets twice.

If it is too big then you would experience turbo lag. Dont forget the added weight. The good thing is that if you can go big on the envelope size and get a custom intercooler to tighten up on the inner fin density or a smaller tube then the efficiency will go up.

I also have the 1000hp PT-88 project for the 73 ls1 camaro! But I need a winter beater

Jimmy, Thanks for the info. But custom made means money. Plus like said before I will probably smash it up before the winters end.

The people that are known for stuffing the hell out of the intercoolers with inner fin are HKS. If you find one of these used probably would do well on that car. I am trying to get a C/S daytona w/ turbo 2 motor car is in excellent shape dude is asking 600.00 bucks for it.
