some turbo help please!!! Ok, ive been doing some homework on forced induction for my 2001 ss camaro. ive come to the conclusion that if i am going to leaving the heads and cam stock with no internal motor work. an sts turbo kit would be the best way to go. they claim with 8 lbs of boost witch, is damn suttle, 508 rwhp, and 548 rwt. now this seems a little extreme for a stock motor. would it be ok to put all that power into a completely internally stock ls1 block? i know. that i would have to invest into injectors and a programmer. what do i need to do for a good setup. intercooler? big blow off
Why would STS be better for ya if you leave the motor stock? I ran a front mount setup on a completely stock 99 TA(did have valve springs for valve float) and the car ran like a beast. I made 532/595@10psi to the wheels. There are some guys making over 600 on stock motor without any problems. It will come down to your fuel system and your tune. If you plan on running 8psi then you will need a intercooler or at least use Meth to cool things down. But a intercooler is the best thing you could do for a turbo setup so I recommend it. As for the BOV going big doesn't really help with power or anything like that but you do need a good one mainly if you are a 6 speed. I used the Tial 50mm with good luck.
STS' numbers are using methanol. They are not elevated. Just yesterday we had a stock LS1, m6, 42lb inj, pump, 918's make 514rwhp at 8psi. The numbers could be slighly less using a fmic. You will need injectors, pump, better valve springs, the GT-67,
fmic or methanol, and a GOOD tune. THe tune is very important with any forced induction. The blow off valve is nice to have too and helps maintain wheel speed if you lift and sounds cool, but a normal 50mm Tial will do great. THe "programmer" you speak of needs to be an edit program like HP Tuners and the tune performed by someone that has tuned forced induction before on LS1's.
If you have an A4, a good stall would be in order also.

I didn't mean to put down the STS kit in anyway just from his post it sounds like someone told him a front mount system would not be a good choice for him. He said without any internal work or heads/cam sts would be the best bet for him, well putting a sts on over a front mount system would have nothing to benefit from that. That's why I asked.

so if i leave the motor completely stock and get an intercooler that would be just fine? of course the tune would have to come as well as a fuel pump, but with a good fuel pump and some good injectors, would i expext numbers in the 500 range, doing nothing internally? ... these front mount systems you speak of..... where can i look to find one? the thing that turned me on about sts is its seemingly affordable, compared to some other turbo setups.... but if the extra cash is needed for the extra dash id go ahead and do it. .. i havent really found too many front mount systems, they seem kinda limited, do you know where i can find a good reputable one? i guess if i get a high volume fuel pump and high flow injectors, and a good computer tune, with the sts system, the numbers would be great. from what im understanding .Any insight is greatly appreciated...
Yes 500 is easy with the right stuff.
STS is cheap but once you start adding stuff to make more power you get close to the price of a front mount system. But I would think STS is a easier kit to install.

sts reply trtturbo is building(built already but waiting on tune) my sts car, it has a GT67 and their fmic. i bought 42lb injectors and a bigger fuel pump. plus the 7.5psi wastegate spring to keep me from going over 7.5psi. i should be expecting north of 470..... "should". keep in mid, the reason i wont have 500 is because im not running meth. not yet anyways. all in all i paid 4600 for all that. but, my kit was used and i bought it on ebay. and my turbo sits so high, barely noticeable from the back. go to trtturbo.com and have a look under installation pictures. mines the red z28

where can i find an intercooler to match with the sts system, will any ol intercooler do... take into mind i know nothing about these things, but it seems that the forced air from the turbo would pass through the inlet of the intercooler cooling the air then, the outlet is connected to the throttle body. i guess my question is... with the sts system would i be able to buy any type of intercooler and hook it up? .... it seems like something would have to be fabricated to allow for the changes in the tubing up front.... know what i mean... it seems like an intercooler would put a foot of space in the system, to where the throttle body would not match with the intake.... does the intercooler get welded to the piping underneath, or is it hooked up with just hoses and clamps to the intake tubing ? if welding is the case, it seems like i could put that intercooler underneath the car just tuck it up there flush with the floor board or something. i have no idea... once again any insight is greatly appreciated.
