Default Boost Spikes?

I have a C5 w/ 6psi TT w/ TNT 100 shot on top I have removed the cats, but I have heard that there are boost spikes after the removal.

Has anyone heard of this occurence? I was informed of possibly an increase in boost up to 10 psi under higher rpm. My goal is to crank boost to 8psi.

How do you remedy this issue?

Can someone clarify why this is occurring.

thanks

I don't know how the presence of cats or not can affect boost spikes, but I hear really big wastegates designed to run big boost can have a hard time, when set up to run low boost, keeping it down. I have a Turbosmart 38mm, which is pretty small, and with a 7# spring it will creep to 8 or even 8.5# sometimes.

I have a CAS twin turbo setup with two turbosmart 38's and with the 7 psi spring it creeps to 8.6 but i know with TIALs it can be a lot higher than that.

How do you confirm boost spikes when you are "running" another car? Its difficult to watch the gauge and drive.

what do you attribute your spikes or creep too? Did you notice them on the street or dyno?

thanks

It's hard. I know... I just like looking at the boost gauge alot.

When I'm gunning it, I'm kind of looking at my tach, my boost gauge, and the road ahead all at the same time out of the corners of my eyes.

I notice it on the street after I've been driving for a while.

Is your set-up custom or a kit?

Greg
your BOV 38 vs. the TiALs, what would be the significant difference between the two and why would the TiAL provide higher spikes.

The reason is I have heard that I can expect up to 10psi at current boost level and that would be a dramatic considering that I spray on top of boost.

Andy,

I believe the reference to boost spikes from removing the cats is more towards a conventional turbo setup. That is because you have back pressure present from the cats, which holds the turbo back (spool), upon removing them you might get some spike or more boost period across the board from less back pressure. About your two 38mm TIAL's, I run the same gate, two of them and on spring pressure only I held 9 psi all the way across the RPM range, no spiking.

Let me know if you need any help.

I was so going to call you last night after a party, this individual freaked me out.

How much more boost should I look for since the cats gone bye? I really dont want to jeopardize the motor. I plan to go up to 8psi but suspect that if it spikes greater than that with a hundred shot of juice....then some trouble? Also only 1 and i think its 44 TiAL

thanks
