Default New 408" dyno queen - 950HP @12psi

Pete got bored and finally decided to put the 408 together Monday. Tuesday it was on the dyno .

Nothing super trick in the short block, Diamond Pistons, and Lunati Rods. it is set up for 1/2" ARP studs though.

Its running a YSi trimmed supercharger from CAPA using their awsome belt drive setup. The dyno room intercooler stopped up at ~900 HP, and max HP at 12psi was ~950 @ 6500. The 60lb injectors also were maxxed out on fuel and even going up to 80 psi didn't help out.

So, Pete had the injectors re-drilled and flow balanced, and the intercooler off the car is going into the dyno cell. Pressure before the intercooler was 20psi. Pressure after the intercooler was 12psi. At 20 psi we're expecting around 1100 HP, and it should go to 7200 or so. In Craig's car it should be good for some 7's.

Its running a set of Nathan Higgins heads, and the cam out of Pete's 422 (didn't have any spare cams laying around). Its a custom Crow SR cam that was used by the HRT team in their Supercar motor. Specs are 258/262 .644/.661 107.5 LSA. Most folks wouldn't call that a supercharger cam, but you can't argue with the results....

Enjoy...

I just see it being possible to make that amount of power....

With no plumbing between the blower and throttle body...

Thats a wicked blower to pressurize the whole dyno room to 12 psi.

That is engine HP so like 760 rwhp with 20% drivetrain loss? Sounds like it could be a good street car LOL!

We've already beaten this to death in other threads. Power loss is not a linear percentage. Peter and others down there have done back to back dyno tests on the stand and in the car. Losses range from 90-140 HP depending on drivetrain efficency, and also tranmission type when going froma Dyno dynamics stand dyno to a Dyno dynamics eddy current RW load dyno.

It should also be noted that a DD Rear wheel dyno reads 10% lower than a 248c.

Nice numbers, if only my YSi could even come close.

What sort of belt/gearing do you have on the blower ?

I take it a cam like that, isnt exactly "streetable" ???

And as another guy mentioned, why the loss of 8psi ?? Sounds like a lot for the IC. What sort of size is it ?

More info from Pete

This engine is just a lazy but very reliable 1,000hp + @ only 6,600rpm with just 12lb’s of boost and a mere 18deg of total ignition. Like Jarrod mentioned, it’s really nothing special and could very well run on pump gas with air intake temps on 100deg.

We sorted the lack of injection by re-drilling the injectors and they are now perfect at 90lb's ea still with high impedance driven from the stock computer ( there is a trick to this, as only 2 holes are needed to be made in order to keep the rigidity in the plate on the commonly used 60lb Seiman injectors at standard fuel pressure.

The other issue we encountered was the air to water intercooler built for the engine dyno years ago and a quick pressure differential check confirmed the loss as it was struggling to flow over 900hp so we grabbed the intercooler out of the car and placed it in a tub of water. The engine instantly made 1,040hp and it’s right on song for what it is.

As you can see the car is sponsored by Vortech and the plan is to show simplicity as with reliability whilst it’s campaigned around the country through the upcoming season.

This engine won’t be a record breaker as it’s purpose is really just a demonstration with an affordable hybrid street engine designed on a budget for those who are interested in easy to tune packages that simply work for the novice.

Here are some pic’s from today, I’ll let you all know how it goes;

Pete.
