z06 Cam after FI

Default z06 Cam after FI

On an NA engine I've heard anywhere from 20rwhp on up to a rediculous unbelieveable 65rwhp after just an '02 z06 cam swap into an 01 LS1. How much should I expect to gain w/ my current basic STS kit pushing 8#. Right now my numbers are 472ish/478 tq. Should I be able to feel a substantially torqueier pull over the stock LS1 cam?

My shop is charging me 800$ which includes installing the valve springs/cam and retuning. I'm trying to guage if it's worth it.

You will get gains higher in the rpm range but I believe the stock cam is stronger under 3000rpm.

Personally I wouldnt bother spending 800 bucks on it. Are you running stock valvesprings? If so I would definitely upgrade those.

I would vote no it's not worth it.
The Z06 cam was designed to work best with the 6-speed trans, so you may see little or no improvement down low. Then again it may work really great.
I know stock cams work well with turbos, but If I were spending that level of money I'd probably get a custom turbo grind.

The Z06 cam made a pretty good difference in my truck. Befor the cam, I dynoed 350rwhp (stock 4.8 with 7psi boost). I haven't dynoed since I installed the cam and valve springs, but based on my weight and trap speeds it should be right around 400rwhp now. I did loose a little down low, which I don't like, the 4.8 sucks down low in this heavy *** truck anyway, but it pulls MUCH stronger from 3500 on up. BTW, I bought a used Z06 cam and springs for $140. Best dollar/hp grain I've spent on my truck. But now I looking for something that will give me some more low end as this cam really isn't too practical for every day driving in a heavy truck.

thats a great price!!

are you getting new springs and pushrods for the 800? if so thats a awsome deal...just my cam springs pushrods and valve seats cost me $850 if they are doing the install and retuning it thats a good deal.

SDPC sells a whole Z06 cam kit new for $575/ cam, springs,retainers, pushrod, timing chain and gaskets.

I just bought a used cam and spring and reused the gaskets and stock pushrods and did the install and tuning my self, but I have EFILive also.

well, I bought the valve springs and cam for 200$ and now separately for the install it's going to be 800$, should I just try to resale the z06 cam and buy a bigger cam and get my money's worth??

ouch i guess that is alot...i thought that included the cost of cam and springs...do it yourself, i installed mine.

That's not a bad price at all for installing the cam and valvesprings, and a tune on your car. I'd use that cam and go ahead and have it installed. Bob
