Auto or Manual
My diesel Volvo is an auto, and for daily driving its great. So easy in traffic etc. But for a performance car that I want to enjoy...no bloody way would I have an auto !!! Cost wouldnt even come into it.
If I was building a drag car that I was trailering about the place, than I guess I would opt for an automatic, but hopefully I wont have to do that, and I can continue to drive my car on the road, as well as race it, and always with the manual.
Also given I need to drive sometimes up to an 800 mile round trip to a drag strip, I think an auto would be horrible due to crap gearing for road use, and very thirsty !! A couple of the events I attend also do top speed runs, so unless I ran a very tall diff, an auto would never do for that either.
As for clutches....Ive about 4000 road miles and 40 passes on my Textralia, and its working fine for me.
I think they have a twin disk coming soon too.
T56 all the way here.

If you could drive a car like mine you would probably be sold on an auto, especially after feeling just an easy street launch. My car is every bit of what I wanted out of a street car with this much power. I don't have overdrive, but I don't miss it, my car cruises at 83mph in 3rd at 3000 rpms. A 4l60 car cruises at 87 mph in 4th at 3000 rpms with 3.73 gears.

Here's a perfect example of auto's vs sticks...
Your car went mid 10's at 145...my car went mid 9's at the same mph. Class dismissed. lol
If you like having a manual, stick with a built T56 with a Textralia...
If you like having an auto, stick with a TH400/4L80E...
It's pratically impossible for us to choose either one for you, let alone make up your mind for you. When it comes right down to it, its all personal preference. Meaning that it really doesn't matter what we say. We aren't the ones driving your car.

I also drove it 750 miles round trip when I did that time, on plain old Nittos, and it runs regular pump gas ( although I was using a little meth that day for the first time )
There is no doubt an auto will be faster over the quarter, but thats not all my car is about.
Considering I have to get on a ferry, and drive at least 200 miles each way to get to a drag strip, which I only manage 3-4 times a year, my time aint so bad.
How I enjoy driving the car, is more important than simply going fast in a straight line. it spends a lot more time being driven normally on the roads, than it does being raced on the track. There isnt even a drag strip in the country I live in !!
If there was a track local to me, with easy access to cheap race fuel, cheap tyres etc etc, I can assure you my car would go a damn sight faster than it has done, as I would be racing at every available oppoortunity.
But despite those difficulties, hopefully I can get back over to england to race in October..who knows, with some decent tyres and a taller diff, I might be able to trap 150+ and improve on my 10.54
My car also ran just shy of 190mph over the standing mile ( had bad belt slippage on that run though for the last 9 secs, although aerodynamics are killing it anyway ), and will cruise on the freeway/motorway at 80mph at around 2000rpm.
An automatic isnt even a consideration for me.

He said the car will be street-raced...unless he likes losing, he should put an auto in the car end of story.

As far as street racing is concerned, all bets are off. An auto by itself is not going to make you win street races, there are too many other factors (tire/suspension/weight/traction/etc......) End of story.
