i once turbocharged an 84 GTI rabbit for about $350.00 bucks....does that count?
junkyard Saab turbo
junkyard Saab intercooler
junkyard Saab exhaust manifold
exhaust pipe for intercooler piping
2 fuel injectors

in all seriousness....i cant understand why anyone would want to build an ls1 for "cheap as possible" method. i mean, dont you take pride in what you have??? i understand money might be tight, however, your just creating more problems for yourself with cheap stuff and cheap turbos.
goodluck in your quest.

You think you are doing your build on a budget when you fab your own kit up, but I learned the hard way ;you will eventually get nickled and dimed to as much as a kit would cost

He still hasnt showed us his list of stuff he has, you usually get what you pay for also is it going to be a street car or a drag car and what is the horsepower goal you could also buy a old junk turbo from a junkyard a get some rope and tie it the battery that would be cheap and easy.

$2800----TTi street kit with 76mm turbo(100miles on it), intercooler, WG, BOV, complete
$350-----Speed Inc cam
$450-----60lb injectors
$1xx-----FPR
and really all i need are the pumps which i just need to get from the guy i bought the kit from, you can say its "budget" but really i just got a good deal on the turbo kit, i didnt and dont expect it to be cheap, "cheap" way out in FI is not a route i want to take, i still plan on buying heads, meth kit, but after that its gonna snowball into a new tranny, new motor, new rearend, im willing to risk it because if you wanna play you gotta pay

i've wanted to turbocharge a Camry, yea a toyota camry 4 cylinder :-p

-you can use the turbo exhaust manifold from an MR2 or turbo celica (ebay) seen them sell for $50
-use a toyota CT26 turbocharger (pretty much the only turbocharger yota used in the 80s-early 90s) cheap on ebay. Has an internal wastegate. Seen them sell for $200, some with the turbo manifold.
-use N/A supra or RX7 injectors (same harness connector) EBAY!
-MR2 turbo 2 bar map sensor is plug and play with camry map. BTW are speed density.
-older camrys have return style fuel system, crank the pressure up.
-older camrys have oil cooler, you can delete this and just put the oil filter on the block, you use the engine coolant lines and attach them to the turbocharger instead.
-you can install a MR2 turbo oil pan, has the oil drain fitting on it.

So all you have to fabricate is, oil lines, down pipe, and charge pipes.
Not a world beater but would be funny to bs around on the streets with some ghetto beater camry.

i would venture to say its possible a turbo setup (turbo setup alone) could be found or built for 2k, but....nothing else.

tail 44mm wg new from some guy here $265
obx intercooler $155
all piping 3 2.5" j bends, 2 4" u bends, 2.5' vband flange, 5" vband and exhuasht flange, 5" to 4" reducer = $310
mustang headers i converted to use with ls1 $110
fmic piping and tail 50 mm bov $325
welding wire $10
oh and i don't have one yet but throw a boost controller in ther for 350

this is just for the turbo kit itself its under 2k and i used all nice parts and did all the labor

now its the other stuff to support the power like injectors forged block built tranny new rear and suspension to hook the power thats when u spend 10-20k

It can be done. I just helped one of my buddies do it, and his entire set up was less than $2,500. And $700 of that was on the fricken gauges. He ran all his own piping for a rear mount, bought a used turbo off one of his friends, found a pump for cheap, etc etc etc. It takes awhile to find all of the parts for your budget, but trust me if you're patient it can be done.

The only way I see to make good power with a turbo setup for under 2k$ is to put ALL the money in driveline parts, steal a nitrous kit, and throw a junk turbo in the trunk as ballast.

I've done a few, the cheapest being around 1K capable of high 11's, (see www.toohighpsi.com) unfortunatly I have a pretty tough time finding enough time to do stuff like that anymore, so my CTS-V will end up with more of a bolt on supercharger.

alright, i knew this would have people on both sides of the fence. i never said that i was buying a kit. i am fabing almost all of my setup.

i used some cheap parts and some decent stuff. nothing over the top.

i wasnt talking about clutch or rearend upgrades, just turbo and fuel stuff.

i fabbed all flanges and piping myself

aeromotive a1000 pump
a1000 regulator
mp t70 w/ .96 ar
ebay a2a intercooler
ebay wastegate and bov
55lb injectors i bought used

i know everyone on here knocks ebay ssautochrome stuff, but on other sites i have seen many people use the wg, bov and intercoolers w/o problems. turbos i will agree are probally junk.

i am not looking for 1000 rwhp right from the start. but this setup will give a me a start. hell, even if i make 450 or 500 rwhp thats still as good or better than most h/c swaps for 2k.

55lb injectors?? Who makes those?; never heard of em...

You left out the braided line,
fuel system fittings,
the costly hot-side piping,
the V-band clamps, worm clamps,
the ($$) silicone couplers,
cone filter,
meth setup (500-550RWHP and stock bottom end, ya better use it), wideband,
fuel pressure guage,
Pro-tuning or a package like HP Tuners ($$!!)...

And as much as you don't want the drivetrain mentioned, you will have no choice but to swap a clutch, so that really HAS to go along with it, even if you want to keep the 10-bolt until it breaks. Personally, I'd have a hard time trusting my entire setup and engine to a eBay bargain-basement wastegate as well...

I think a DIY'er who can weld can do buy and install a used turbo, intercooler, hotsides and cold sides for $2,000 - $2,500 but that would not include fuel injectors, the overall fuel system, and tuning 'ware. I think that in the end to do it right, ie. not use a turbo or intercooler that is too small for an LSx setup, you will spend at least $3500 for stuff assuming you are fabbing up the pipe yourself or getting it done supercheap. I have seen some interesting turbos sell for $800-$1200 like on TurboMustangs.

I think there is a unspoken judgement by the original poster that folks waste money or something, and frankly it's up to the person, their wallet, their abilities, and their time constraints as to what they can build or pay for. In my case I have no time, but have a fair amount of money, and zero fabbing skills. I paid several thousand more for my setup than someone who could have built it on their own, but I run a small consulting firm and do this site too.

My idea of a cheap turbo system would include a next door neighbor going through a rough divorce and needing a quick 1500 to keep his house from going forclosed, lol.
